Taking Power Armor from the dead
If I kill someone in power armor can I only take plates, is there no way of taking the whole suit itself?

Another question, I have aquired 4 PA suits, found them. One of them, a T45 suit always has steal written in red instead of enter, even though I've owned it and been using it for some time, the game thinks i'm stealing it? no biggy, just curious.

The only way to get the Power Armor Frame from an enemy is to shoot or steal the Fusion Core from the suit and have them exit it. Otherwise you can only get the pieces.

And if you get a suit that shows as owned by someone else the only way that I am aware of to change that is to use the console. Enter the console, click on the suit and type in "setownership" (without the quotes, of course). That will set it as being owned by you.

you can also get it by putting a live grenade into thier inventory. makes them exit the PA rendering the frame immune to the explosion. this frame then also counts as stolen.

the only frames i know the game tags as "stolen" are those from raiders/gunners and BOS knights if you take em via the method of placeing live grenade or stealing the fusion core or shooting the fusion core.

there is bunch of fixed found frames that are never counted as stolen as they are meant for the player. basicly all frames than can spawn x01 for example. thats 12 in total not counting dlc ones and 3 of em are full sets. all dont become x01 until player lvl 28. if you get to close to em before lvl 28 they get level locked forever even if you dont pick em up. so be careful with exploring TOO MUCH early on.

I think there is a mod that allows this, but I have no clue what it was called...

If you had a settler jump in your PA during a settlement defence they will claim it.

To prevent that all you gotta do is remove the core when you exit.

i think there's a suit at Roadside Pines Motel that is at first kind of glitched into a wall that you can't get into (i assume this is why the raiders there don't jump into it when you attack) but if you fast travel away and come back, you can enter it, but it's tagged as stolen. you can take parts off the frame, use them on another frame and they aren't tagged as stolen anymore when on a different frame. the only annoying thing about it is if you have companions around who don't like stealing when you're trying to change parts or remove the core. i just give the "stolen" frame to a companion to use.

I find it generally good that enemies die along with their power armour frames, since you can already easily end up with a bunch of extra frames for which you have no good use. Settlers and companions tend to get out of them now and then, leaving them sitting around, and you can't sell them, scrap them, or even easily move them around or to different settlements (because the only way to move one even a fraction of an inch is to enter it, or instruct someone else to do so).

The overpass at the Quincy ruins and the raider camp just north of Natick Banks already have their own little collection of leftover frames from the people I shot there who didn't happen to be wearing them at the time.

There are 4 merchants who sell frames and their inventory resets every 48hours.
(must pass at least 8 real world minutes for reset to happen though)

Arturo (Diamond City), Daisy (Good Neighbor), Atom Cats Garage, Prydwen
Atom Cats also has a 5% of having a piece of X-01 armor (if high enough level).

Before I start another playthrough using my new videocard I should count up how many full suits of Power Armor I collected. It's probably a couple hundred or more.

I use a mod that recovers the frames: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20890/?

Without mods, that would have to include bought or captured frames; in the vanilla game and DLCs there are around 40 power armour frames that can be found scattered about.

if anyone comes here after all this years, let me tell you i got a way to do it with commands, the thing is the power armor can duplicate but this is how i did it
- first open the console and select the dead person in power armor
- then type resurrect and hit enter
- after resurrect type: callfunction "actor.switchtopowerarmor"
we wil see how the enemy resurrects but immediatly they'll get out of the armor.
wait until they end the animation and open the console and type: kill.
-after that select the armor with the console open and type: setownership
and thats it, youll get the armor
if it duplicates justo open the console and select the duplicate and type disable
