Help with The Mechanist final battle
I play on Survival and am on Level 64

I have tried to finish this damn quest all day. Usually one of two things happens. I crash because of VATS booting me back to desktop, and I need VATS because my character is a Luck + Agility build. Or I easily win the battle and the game bugs out and The Mechanist just keeps dropping mines, tesla coils and gas tanks. Nothing I do can progress the story. I have done this battle at least 12 times and it's really starting to piss me off.

I went in there around level 95 together with Ada and it was a breeze. I cannot tell you the last time my game crashed, because it happens very rarely. Then again am I using only the Unofficial Patch and no other mods.

mines, tesla coils and gas tanks, if you kill a few, the timer countdown will start, 'power remaining 70%' etc, til zero, then it's over.

You have to keep killing his robots, which can be extremely dangerous. They will quickly overwhelm you if you leave the safety of the bridge crane near the entrance. If you stop shooting when the countdown starts, it will not continue.

Some of those robots are armed with some sort of "death ray' that will chew through X0-1 V power armor like a hot knife through butter--kill you in a couple of seconds.

Bring lots of jet. Be prepared to use it all.

If you stop shooting after the countdown starts, it Will continue. [Aka, after countdown starts you can hide from 99 to 50, then shoot one then hide again 50 to 25 shoot hide 25 to 0.]

Like I said, at level 95 with Ada. Just pimp her out with missile launcher and Gatling laser, which is how I went in there. And a Troubleshooter's Combat Rifle for myself. I found the battle was rather short and not much to talk about.

You're all missing the point. I can easily win without any trouble. It's the crashing and bug glitches that ♥♥♥♥ me up.

Well you asked for help for the final mechanist fight and you got the help. Perhaps you should ask for help with your ever crashing VATS instead. But that problem kind of goes under in your posting.

And for crashes some more stats of your computer system would be helpfull + checking for latest drivers and all that

Well, do you use mods or not?

If you do then start with getting rid of them. And if you don't then fix your game, update your drivers, see to it your PC runs well. There is no real standard recipe for your problem. The game runs fine and when it doesn't then it's 99% of the time the user's fault, no offense. And without knowing what you did can everyone only guess or throw lots of questions at you about what you did and so far have tried, etc.

If you have a save before you get locked into that area, you could go back and load the holotapes from the chief scientist, facility director, and lead engineer into the elevator terminal near the entrance to gain access that way and avoid the fight entirely.

I don't remember whether having the holotapes also allows you to avoid hacking the terminal.

and fail the quest.
The quest is to confront the Mechanist. You can only do that after the fight.

I don't remember failing the quest last time I did it that way. I still got to convince the Mechanist to stand down.

This is the right way to do it if the fight is too much for you. You need to bypass a master locked terminal which Ada can unlock for you with the hacking mod if you don't have any perk in hacking. She unlock it for me 1 out of 3 try usually. Play the 3 holotape after to open the elevator. Once you get inside you can chose what to do with the mechanist. There's a bed inside the lair you can use to sleep , it's in a cell.
