Help me understand "Mirelurk Kings"
Mirelurk Queen, Mirelurk, Murlurk hunter, spawn, etc --- all bugs. Mirelurk king -- swamp thing. No relation. Definitely a "fish". How does htis work? They are not arthropods like the other mirelurks. Like birds mating with dogs -- makes no sense.

Becasue reasons.

Perhaps every Mirelurk goes through several evolutions in its life seperated by a cocoon or something, the older they get the further they go till a queen or king in some years or something, and when one reaches queen or kings age they move onto start a new hive elsewhere but most of them die from some random explorer or other monsters thats why mirelurk queens and kings are still rather rare in the commonwealth.

Ok, Simpson3k might be onto something...

This convo might be above the heads of many -- my apologies.

Its fine, if this forum isnt for stuff like that to talk about, then for what else is it?

Seriously? It's a game where cows and deer have 2 heads and you're wondering why mirelurk kings don't look like the other mirelurks

They are crustacean decapods, which is sort of a varied group. I think most mirelurks belong to Brachyura and king is some sort of Parastacoidea.

In short: they look like crab variants to me, instead of bugs or fishes. Radioactive mutations may have allowed them to breed with each other, causing even more varied mutations.

They can be anything that lurks in a mire. [not fish, fish swim].

Thinking along that line, what if mirelurk kings are the reproductive male forms, with almost all other mirelurks being female? The extreme mutant version of sexual dimorphism.

Given this level of diversity, it can be assumed that the term "mirelurk" is more than just the common name for one species, but rather a colloquial term for any of several typically-chitinous, marsh-dwelling creatures living together in symbiotic relationships.

Mirelurks are like Zergs. I don't question why I just kill them.

People call all fish creatures mirelurks, that's it...

Cause they come from an horror movie and needed an ugly looking family to go with it.
Most people hate anything with more then 4 legs. So...1 + ? = profit?
