follower affinity question.
How does the follower affinity work?

I know followers like and dislike things i do but is there some kind of hidden gain in follower affinity by just having them around?

Google and the wiki are your friends.

To answer the direct question, followers do seem to get an occasional bump to affinity just for hanging around you. Although the wiki says it requires completion of quest, in my experience it just happened every so often, even while I was running around collecting stray perk magazines (and thus, not busy completing quests).

Oh, i did read the wiki but i must have missed that part in it somehow.
Reason i was asking is because i was building my castle settlement for a long time and had just gotten McCreedy before i started building, once i was done i went out and he gave me the first follower quest and i was wondering how that can be possible as i had not done anything he likes before that.

This has been my experience also; my affinity increases just for exploring & killing bad guys in addition to the published boosts. The published boosts will give you the popup in the upper left corner ('Piper liked that') but I also noticed increases just for general gaming.

My last playthrough I got Preston's affinity perk without doing any settlement quest he asked for. I did Abernathy farms and then just kept him as my sherpa, sorry I meant my companion, until he loved me.

It's not covered by the wiki from what I could see skimming through the page, but every like in game hour or two when you pick up an item you get a small boost. Generally every time they make a complaint/comment about picking up junk you are getting a 0.75% boost, and this one doesn't stop until 90% affinity. You also sometimes get a fairly large boost for killing a group of enemies, this one only seems to happen when the companion has lower affinity and the enemies are relatively strong, it's like a 3% boost and I think stops around the 40-50% mark. The "passive" gain for just being with you while they are at low affinity levels doesn't require any quests completed in my experience, you just get like 3% for doing nothing every once in a while, but it stops pretty quickly at I think the 20-30% point.

There's a mod that shows all affinity gain numbers as they happen which I use, so that's where I'm getting those numbers from. By default it shows percent gains, 100% affinity is when they give you the perk, but I think you can change it so the affinity gains are the actual numbers. IE 15 points instead of 0.75% or whatever.

Open Console, Click the NPC and "getav ca_affinity" spits out the actual hard numbers if you realy want know it. Usualy its 250, 500, 750 and the last one at 1000 you get a conversation and on some a Quest (what need finish first before next speech starts by the way, even if you push it over the next Number)
That one got me on the First play thru i did.. tryed hard to get Danse over 1k so i get the Perk and it dint and dint came - You need to do a certain quest before you can get it by the way ;-P
