Getting rid of corpses
Several of my settlements are places I have liberated from assorted enemies. Dead bodies that are out in the open seem to vanish, presumably eaten by local wildlife, but I can't get rid of the bodies that are inside buildings. I pick them up and carry them well outside the settlement but next time I visit the place they are back where they were. Are there any console command that I can use to fix this?

The way I delete corpses is enter console and click the corpse then type Disable.

First and foremost SAVE as a new savegame, not only quicksave, because disable stuff with the console can go really badly wrong.. SAVE... be sure you SAVED it

then open console target the object carefully (in case other objects are in the way, try to grab and move the corpse first so that you really target the corpse and not something else, something hidden)

Then type markfordelete (enter) disable (enter)

Those both commands after each other will remove it forever. The first takes care it wont spawn again when you reenter the cell, the second will remove it now.

You can also use markfordelete, save the game and then load it. You should always keep extra saves as backup before you use this command as you can easily delete something important by mistake and ruin your whole save. I will never forget how annoying you were piper. Gone but not forgotten.

Best do that the other way round. Disable makes things invisible and is reversed by enable, so if the right thing disappears then you are safe to markfordelete which is irreversible.

You should get the mod called Scrap Dead Things.

But when its made invisible, you cannot target it anymore, can you?

And i made sure that the game was SAVED before to tape the word SAVE and SAVED big and often so it can be reversed.

It will remain targeted until you click on something else or type prid.

If you happen to disable something unintentionally,
BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE ...
type "enable" to restore it.

If you have something targetted once, you can do all the commands you like. If you disable it, it will keep the target active until you target something else.

There's no reason to delete them, it doesn't save you any loading time or cut down on save size. The reason those corpses hang around/reset is because they are baked into the settlement, so if you delete them the game is still keeping track of the fact they have been deleted. Disable is enough, and if you are only disabling things there's a lower chance of screwing your game up by deleting something important without realizing it. Personally, if I can drag them I just move them to some corner and leave them there without disabling them. I used to use mods like Scrap Everything, which is another way to deal with them, but got tired of the save bloat.

In some cases you can also plan ahead with luring mobs away from future used areas before you kill them.

Best example is covenant. Dont kill them all inside covenant, rather lure them all out and kill them outside of town on the road. Then the corpses are saved there.

Thanks to all of you for this. Having also looked at fallout.wikia.com I could possibly use inv to check I have selected the right object (they are all corpses) or possibly modpos z 1 ?

disable apparently 'hides' the object, whatever that means. If it only makes them invisible then I could presumably still interact with them without being able to see them and possibly the flies that gather round dead bodies would still be there. If disable removes all possibility of interacting with them (and the flies) then that would appear to be all I need.

BTW I have just discovered Covenant. So I need to kill them then?

Disable basically turns the object off. You can't interact with it, it has no collision, it doesn't have any effect on the world, it's basically not there, but can be turned back on with a simple enable. Delete removes the object from the world, but for a preset object that attempts to load as part of the map every time you load the game this works barely any different from disable, it's just not as easy to get that object back in game if you need it.

Disable is for preset things that are going to be loaded again and again regardles of how they are flagged. Delete is for randomly generated objects that for some reason aren't cleaned up normally. IE in early versions of the game the ash piles left by laser kills would never be cleaned up in settlements, even the ash piles from random settlement attacks or from enemies that wandered in from a nearby spawn, so you would delete those ash piles instead of disabling them because they would otherwise stack up and bloat your save.
