I Hate the sh-it out of Father blah blah blah, blah! in the story.
I feel no obligation to argue with this individual. I agree with some of his observations and disagree with others. But in the end it was enjoyable to read becase its a rant that is not pretending to be an "objective critique" of the game.
Gratz!
Once you've traveled more with Nick, you'll understand why he's always 'playing detective'.
Nick is arguably one of the most human of all the characters. Those dog in the headlight eyes can be a little spooky when he pops out of the shadows during a mission, though.
The resentment you feel may be an anti-authority thing - I feel it too sometimes. I think it's based on your character's adaptation to the new society, and his desire to re-establish the values of the old.
Or not.
Anyway, I was just in it for the perk.
My biggest grief is that a synth character is forced upon the player as a part of the main storyline with no alternative solution available. Especially as a BOS member I should be allowed to destroy that abormanation upon first contact and find help elsewhere.. I see no reason what so ever why Piper couldn't replace NIck in case of his termination if the player should choose an anti-institute/synth approach. She seems to know just as much as Nick and is already used as a stand-in on several occasions. Guess a open ended story approach is just to much for Beth to handle..
It's not like you had any other feasible way to get the information out of Kellogg; his job with the Institute is one he generally seems to enjoy (he may act a bit sentimental at times, but he's still a psychopath), and it comes with perks you couldn't hope to match with any offer you could make (like advanced cybernetics that no-one else is allowed to have, even within the Institute).
While I do feel that there should have been a more fluid way to do it, rescuing Nick to find Kellogg in the first place ensures that he's involved and has a reason to continue helping on your case when you need to take a look inside Kellogg's head.
"Without Nick, there would be no-one with the necessary Institute hardware to access Kellogg's memories, and without seeing those you wouldn't have the faintest clue of how to go about finding your son."
A Typical Anti-Bethesda would say something like this:
'COULDN'T EVEN MAKE STORY RIGHT! 1 WAY SUCKS! NEED 464,000 WAYS TO COMPLETE 1 MISSIONS!1!!!11! BOYCOTT! NOT BUYING ANY MORE GAMES!!?!?!?!1!'
It doesn't matter if that is the only possible way to do it, they will still hate for no reason. Trying to play F4 without Nick is like trying to finish all the COD's campaigns without using any weapons at all.
