My gripe with Nick Valentine and his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t Detective work
The conversation after you complete "Unlikely Valentine" and you're explaining the whole "my family gone!" story, its so obnoxious, tedious. I hate it. And that memory den crap? The filler in the main questline that is nick valentine annoys the hell out of me, and thats why I never use him as a companion.

Sole Survivor: "[He had a handgun] I didn't see it... but that sound"
Nick: "Large caliber handgun."
WTF? Guns are loud bro, and i didnt even describe anything. I said theres a sound

Sole Survivor: "[There were two people man and woman]"
Nick Valentine: "[Proffessionals! Small team]"
Jesus nick, your assumption game is strong.

The all the Nick sequences in the main questline are so forced and are arguably the worst acting in an overall poorly (well maybe poorly is strong, but they could have done better for sure, and nicks acting is just bad.) acted game.(I think the best acting is the conversations between hostiles like gunners and raiders when your sneaking and they havent detected you. Some decent moments there.) This character gets so much praise, I just dont get it all.

I slightly edited, because I realized I was harsh to one of my favourite games, and made it sound like I think FO4 is a bad game. Its not. I assume your comment is sarcastic, pointing out the negativity of my original post. (ironic, and hypocritical based on previous comment about nick and assuptions, I know.)

It was and it was. I'm one of those FO4 addicts that can't stop building and displaying long enough to finish my first playthrough after 1k+ hours into the game. :)

It's never a wasteland of time if you're enjoying what you're doing.

'MORE stairs?! Who designed this vault, a fitness instructor?' I love Nick's lines.
I Hate the sh-it out of Father blah blah blah, blah! in the story.

People should take note: THIS IS HOW YOU RANT!

I feel no obligation to argue with this individual. I agree with some of his observations and disagree with others. But in the end it was enjoyable to read becase its a rant that is not pretending to be an "objective critique" of the game.

Gratz!

Its mostly the storyline dialogue I have an issue with with Nick. The quote you left, I agree was pretty funny, and nicks random lines are not bad at all, but that seems to be a common aspect with fallout 4, poorly done dialogue with some pretty great general comments.

Once you've traveled more with Nick, you'll understand why he's always 'playing detective'.

Nick is arguably one of the most human of all the characters. Those dog in the headlight eyes can be a little spooky when he pops out of the shadows during a mission, though.

The resentment you feel may be an anti-authority thing - I feel it too sometimes. I think it's based on your character's adaptation to the new society, and his desire to re-establish the values of the old.

Or not.

Anyway, I was just in it for the perk.

My problem is more with Bethesda's relatively lazy dialogue writing. Nicks banter is great. But man his part in the main questline is forced and feels incredibly choppy

I'm completly behind you OP. Never really liked Nick Valentine as a character and it feels like he's forced down your throat on every playthrough..

My biggest grief is that a synth character is forced upon the player as a part of the main storyline with no alternative solution available. Especially as a BOS member I should be allowed to destroy that abormanation upon first contact and find help elsewhere.. I see no reason what so ever why Piper couldn't replace NIck in case of his termination if the player should choose an anti-institute/synth approach. She seems to know just as much as Nick and is already used as a stand-in on several occasions. Guess a open ended story approach is just to much for Beth to handle..

To be slightly fair, I must point out that you theoretically could go straight to ft hagan and kill kellog. But bethesda didnt mean for you to do that so still the issue stands

Without Nick, there would be no-one with the necessary Institute hardware to access Kellogg's memories, and without seeing those you wouldn't have the faintest clue of how to go about finding your son.

It's not like you had any other feasible way to get the information out of Kellogg; his job with the Institute is one he generally seems to enjoy (he may act a bit sentimental at times, but he's still a psychopath), and it comes with perks you couldn't hope to match with any offer you could make (like advanced cybernetics that no-one else is allowed to have, even within the Institute).

While I do feel that there should have been a more fluid way to do it, rescuing Nick to find Kellogg in the first place ensures that he's involved and has a reason to continue helping on your case when you need to take a look inside Kellogg's head.

A Typical Anti-Bethesda would say something like this:
'COULDN'T EVEN MAKE STORY RIGHT! 1 WAY SUCKS! NEED 464,000 WAYS TO COMPLETE 1 MISSIONS!1!!!11! BOYCOTT! NOT BUYING ANY MORE GAMES!!?!?!?!1!'

It doesn't matter if that is the only possible way to do it, they will still hate for no reason. Trying to play F4 without Nick is like trying to finish all the COD's campaigns without using any weapons at all.
