VATS just feels like cheating
I know it isn't but it just seems wrong. Maybe I am not using it right.

If you think it is then dont use it. It's a way to pick your targets and attack if they are fast moving or if you are just a bad aim.

You don't need it.

I only use it for fun and where there are several opponents so I can make a nice series of shots and enjoy the slow-motion. I like watching the kill shot.

It's something of a callback to the original games, but to be frank, it's not always the best option. It's certainly useful, but there are times when you're better off using your own aiming skils and firing speed.

They've worked it in pretty nicely, however, with perks and criticals that ensure you've got a solid reason to use it.

I get that feeling occasionally.
But when I have a bunch of feral ghouls, supermutants, raiders, gunners or feral hounds trying to eat me ... I kind of throw that guilt out of the window.

I guess I need to play with it a bit more. It seems to break the immersion a bit for me.

But I can see where it would be useful. Like killing those annoying Bloat Flies and mosquitos. I hate the stinking bugs. ;o)

Never really works well for me but I noticed there are some perks related to it. Maybe I need to use them.

Then don't use it. How simple is that?

But with the right perks, VATS can be almost god mode. It's up to you how you build it out.

Exactly. And I don't think a lot of people understand this mechanic.

To get the most out of VATS you need a Luck build with Critical Banker and all the perks to refresh the Crit Meter faster and to do more damage in VATS and with Criticals.

This is an entirely different build than a Sneaky Sniper or Melee / Commando. Oh sure you can eventually get all the perks and be a god. But for early game when you are doing the main story story missions one must make a choice for build.

I'm not a big VATS and have played entire games without using VATS. Some might ask, "Well how do you shoot blood bugs then?" That's were jet comes in handy.

But I've playd VATS builds that were heavy on Luck. But if you are going to put a lot of points in Luck then you're not going to have them for the Strength / Melee or Charisma / Negotiations or Agility / Sneak builds. At least not early in the game.

Thanks, this helps. Current game I am working on a stealth / sniper type character.

Next game I may concentrate on VATS a bit. It could be interesting.

Also, I like it when my guy gets Godlike powers.

Playing fallouts without vats just make it another fps game and there's tons of other game that deliver better controls/mechanic for fps fights. Vats and power armor are what make fallout 4 stand out from the others. Manual aiming also make the game too easy for me so vats fighting is more fun.

You can get a huge amount out of VATS without investing anything in Luck. The other trees offer quite a few perks (i.e. penetrator, blitz, gun-fu) that work very well with it while simply learning to build weapons for reduced AP costs and improved VATS accuracy can make a world of difference, as can making use of the huge critical damage boosts found on laser, plasma and the double barrel shotgun.

I would advise starting a new game and trying to play without ever attacking outside of VATS to give it a proper trial for a while.

Indeed.
Many of the perks and legendary effects are either VATS only or are bias towards its use, and without considering VATS the weapon modding mechanic is a near absolute linear upgrade mechanic.

I love it, Head vs Shoutgun is always fun

VATS doesn't necessarily have to be god-mode targeting. It's fantastically handy for pointing out hidden enemies, as well as mines and other physical threats. You don't necessarily have to *use* it after that though...

When I'm traveling the wasteland, I use "W" and "Q".

VATS is supposed to be your character's skill with a weapon instead of your own manual aiming.
I use it mostly to scan the terrain.

I also like a good kill cam once in a while.

P.S.
I love the sound effect.
And hearing your companion talk smack in slow motion is hilarious.
