Buggy terminals
Hacking seems buggy for me. Couldn't find anything online.
The way I understand it is if you hit the wrong password, it will tell you how many letters that are in the right password and are in the same place. So if the word I choose is "fall" and the correct word is "bald" the likeness will say 2.

But for me it doesn't always do that. If I choose "self" as the wrong word and get a likeness of 1 then choose the word "puff" it sometimes says that the likeness for puff is 0. Not possible. It should be saying 1 because there's only one letter in both words that is the same and in the same place.

Is this a known bug or is the wiki wrong about how likeness works?

EDIT just happened again with desk and dens. Starting to piss me off, there has to be an explanation.

Since I used to have immense trouble with Hacking let me try to give you a tip that saved me so much time when doing it.

When you activate a terminal that you want to hack look for the dud removers first. If you see anything that's between {} [] <> or () then go to the first part of that, it should light up the entire section. Click it and either one wrong word gets removed or you get your tries back. Fun thing is, sometimes those things are between words.
So, say you see {%#desk&#} then it won't be usuable. But if you find a dud remover that gets rid of that word as a wrong one then you can use it just fine.

Also, question, did you eventually find what the correct word was supposed to be and compare it to what you got before? There are some passwords that are annoying because the letters show up in multiple words that have no correlation.

Like say the word is 'Self' and you choose 'puff' it will say that it has one letter correct. If you were to choose 'fall' it will say that it too has one letter correct despite both fall and puff not being similiar.

Otherwhise, I think you might have encountered a rare bug my friend. One I have not heard of before. Let's see if we can get the issue figured out.

self and puff may not have a letter in common with the proper word. s, e, and l, are not in puff, so it could be the word you are looking for has one of those letters in it. From my own experience, the only errors I've ever seen happen were my own. Either I was miscounting, or else I completely missed a word due to it being semi-buried in the mess of oddball characters.

Anytime anyone has a posted a list of words with the clues they got, and said it was wrong, it took about 2 minutes for someone to find it. If you want, post a screenshot of the clues etc... maybe I can pick it out for you.

In your example let's say the password is "soon". The likeness for "self" would be one but the likeness for "puff" would be zero.

I got tired of the hacking minigame and used a mod that got rid of all options except the correct one. As long as I have the skill to hack I can get it.

Hehe. It's one of the minigames I enjoy. I used to love that one game we used to play when I was younger, Mastermind I think it was. One person sets up colored pegs, and you have 10 chances to guess it. Used to play that for hours sometimes.

The lockpicking minigame is annoying this time around, at least in 3/NV you could force the lock with X% of getting it. Once you maxed lockpicking, very easy was 100% and I think easy was 90% or something, so I used to just force every one of them.

Like the others have said there's an easy explanation for both of your examples. With self and puff for all you know the correct letter could have been the S, E, or L in self rather than the F, which is why the game says 1 for self and 0 for puff. With dens and desk it could have been N or S in dens being correct. Remember, the correct letters means that it is the correct letter AND the letter is in the correct spot.

Ok, I'll try to simplify it using Puff and Self. It isn't that they both have an f in the same spot. It is that both words contain one letter each that is the same as in the right password. So, if the password is Pale, the P is correct in Puff and the L is correct in Self.

Hope this helps.

You're welcome.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but you can use the system to your advantage. If you have a bunch of words ending in "ing" or "ion", you can pick one of them, and if it doesn't say at least a 3, you know none of them are going to be the word. Can narrow your choices down immensely. I've actually found the Novice level hacks harder than the Master level ones. The words you get are extremely close together in letters.

Enjoy your gaming. :)

Of all the Fallout series that involves hacking, jumping jesus on a pogo stick, i just guess them words till i get it right, because theres no logic in it, the clues they give you are misleading like hell. I tend to like them master or expert hacking, those easy ones are hard as hell. I usually dont follow the clues they give you, i just look at the screen and pick out the odd looking word, most of the time it work for me. Another thing is how do you get your companion to hack it? he keeps yapping about let me look at that terminal or is it just for show.

Look at them and hit E to order them, then look at the computer and send them there. There's only a couple who can hack. Nick, Deacon I'm pretty sure. Maybe another one or two.
