Best heavy infusions?
My reading shows that only the Harald Curved Greatsword, Spllitleaf Greatsword, and Fume Ultra Greatsword achieve S scaling in str.
The exile greatsword only gets A scaling with heavy infusion, but fextra wiki states it gets more AR than the Harald Curved Greatsword. I don't understand this.

Is the exile great sword the best pure damage with A scaling or would some other heavy infusion get better damage?

The scaling indicator often means nothing. A lot of S scaling weapons are crap (painting guardian's, PK Scythe etc). Weapons that get a B or A, or even C, are often the best

Do you mean because of getting more hits in while retaining high damage?

I going to hunt down the splitleaf greatsword and make it my second slabbed weapon. I lack knowledge of best weapons still and am currently using the heavy claymore +10.
Depends, as for slash 40 strength exhile greatsword with lothric war banner in left hand will do the job. If you want to take your strength build further level it to 66 and 2hand the Greatsword or Great club for your standard and strike needs.

My personal tastes are using the exhile for pve and the great club for pvp.

There really is no best weapon in that sense in any of the souls games, with Storm Ruler against Yhorm being one of the exceptions in Ds3.

There are some weapons which are considered better than others (in pvp), mostly found in one of the dlcs, not because they are this much better in damage but because their moveset/abilities can essentially be abused to have the edge over players that are unfamiliar with the weapons mechanics.

Infusing your weapons with a gem that matches your stat distribution best would be sensibel, as is reading up on what weapons scale in which way, like urabe mikoto already mentioned.

Having better scaling does not mean that damage will be higher. There are also other factors that can make a weapon better than others. For example, Bastard Sword can often surpass Claymore on damage, but it is still an inferior weapon (range is too short, no poking attacks, WA is less useful etc). Splitleaf, Exile and Claymore are all good STR weapons. You will be fine with any of them.

Base stat matters. Many S scaling weapons have lower base attack and are frequently outperformed (AR wise) by weapons with inferior scaling. Those three weapons you picked are all solid though.
