Also, why not start somewhere more simple - why can you only summon the Sword Master for the Vordt/Dancer boss fight(s) after killing him and taking his "clothes" and weapon? He wasn't a phantom when you killed him - he's super dead, and stripped of posessions. How is his sign there and why would he help?
Alternatively - given how many dragons there have been, I'm preeeetty sure more than one person in the series has slain a dragon (therefore, being a Dragonslayer) - player included. I mean, heck, the "real" name of the Greatsword is the Dragonslayer (since it's literally Guts' sword, Dragonslayer, from Berserk).
You can summon him for Champion Gundyr too!
