Gundyr can be tough depending on which class you started as. There's not much you can do besides learning his attack patterns and learning to dodge them more efficiently.

First off whats your starting class, cause if you chose the theif your gona have a tough time of it. Kight is probably the easiest starter, and choose the firebombs as your burial gift, use them on his second stage as he is weak to fire then.

avoid his spear attack with well timed dodges. on form 2, keep under the white skeletal arm. and roll away when it stands tall as its about to try and squash you.

Faster classes like the merc work well. deprived is tough though.
if you hang yourself, you won't be able to defeat iudex gundyt. people usually need to be alive to accomplish things (there are some exceptions, of course, but for this case, don't hang yourself).

Tip for playing safe: Attack him only when Iudex Gundyr jumps up straight into the air. That usually means a plunge attack with a really long cooldown.

What happens when he jumps up: You miss his attack with a well timed dodge (do not simply spam roll), roll back in, attack twice, roll out. Rinse and repeat. In phase two, keep your distance to force the boss to do this attack over and over again.

Also, you should be able to pick up some firebombs along the way. Phase 2 Iudex is extremely vulnerable to fire, just potshot away.

And remember: Don't get greedy with your hits, patience is crucial in outlasting a boss.

Good tips, from my view tho, I think his second stage seems easier if you stay pretty close to him. But I guess op will find his way.

Don't get demotivated tho, I started with thief and also had to retry for some time. :)

I found him very difficult as I kept trying to forward roll under him when he does his jumping attack. I kept hitting his knees. When I realised how easy it was to jump forwards and to the left I could get two good hits on his back each time. Then get in close, Second phase spam fast attack and hope.

Also there are 5 firebombs outside his gate... save them for his second phase in case you need to do damage at range, just make sure you equip them before you go in... make them count as they don't come back.
Starting as a northern warrior you can buff yourself with the weapon skill for damage, two handing the buffed axe for decent per hit damage.
Assassin is a great starting class if you can dodge and parry even halfway decent as it allows for quick damage.
Knight has armor and can take an extra hit.
It pays to be agressive, the shorter the fight is the less time you have to make mistakes, but don't get greedy. Always make sure you save enough stamina to roll out or away.

is this a serious post? if it is then i'll tell you how i beat him at sl 1. After he morphs, get in real close and behind him, then just roll thru his atttacks, but remember stay close and behind him and attack!

You can parry his attacks. in fact you can wreck him into second phase really early with it like.. 4 parries as the thief

This is a life choice my good man, will you stand there and lose to a man who needs lesser power than a mere mortal or will you fight and claim your right as KING!

He only really gave me an ounce of trouble because I always insist on playing as a Deprived, but he's a good example of a boss that forces you to learn some of the more important basics of the game. Don't try to distance yourself from him, it just doesn't work. Instead, try rolling to dodge his attacks by timing them and always keep moving to his side, trying to get behind him. Once phase 2 starts, he can still be injured while he's morphing, so have at it. After that, try to finish the fight ASAP because his 100 degree field of damage in front of him is more generous and he gets quite spastic all around. Attack from behind. Remember, no distance and don't give him time.
Another strategy that is just as valid, if not more so, is to git gud immediately.

I learned by parrying him, he's a cake walk. Also in his 2nd stage, just walk behind him ... he can't reach you. There's a likelyhood you will learn his every moveset and you can own him on the fly. Took me a few tries on my first DS III run but you'll manage friend.

Be behind him all the time. End.
