No pause button is dumb
Okay first off. I'm new to the series with my first game being Bloodborne and it's one of the best games I've ever played. But there's one big flaw in that game and from what I've heard it's the same in all the souls games and that is the designed choice of having no way to pause the game. which I think is a really dumb design choice.

Let me elaborate: One thing I like with the souls games which for example the elder scrolls series lack is that the game doesn't freeze everything around you when looking through your inventory or while healing. This is both realistic and adds to the atmosphere, you have to check that you are safe before looking for that item. BUT when I need to go to do something irl (like opening the door or other urgent matters) I really miss a pause button. I'm in the middle of a bossfight or in the forbidden snakey forrest when the door knocks. I have about 40000 souls and I'm far away from the nearest safe place. What do I do? I like when a game is punishing you for messing things up in the game but the game shouldn't punish you for having a life as well. I can't plan ahead if something like that happens.

So now I want to hear. Is there anyone else like me in this community? Or you guys who don't think a pause button would be good what's your argument for it?

PS. I've seen some really toxic "hardcore" gamers answering on similar forums, if you are like them please keep away.

PS 2. I am ofcourse talking about offline mode.

Well, the only instance where pausing would work at all is while unembered, so you can't have summons or invaders. Dunno if NPC invaders could be paused, or if they use a similar world- joining system to actual players where it wouldn't work.

Well if you're not in a bossfight you can easily just quit out and when you're in a bossfight either finish it quickly or just alt+f4

Well yeah I'm ofcourse talking about offline mode. But I guess that a pause in online could also work in co-op. When you pause the summon leaves and the game freezes and nobody could enter your world. But then again that wouldn't work in pvp so I mostly argue for that we need pause in offline mode.

But I mean why would the game be designed like this? It's just punishing you for having a life besides the game. A pause button would be soo much easier than just having to quit everytime you need to answer the phone or something like that. I think it's just a really bad design choice

No, because of the way the online works.

Everyone would just see "Invasion" and hit the pause button.

You can, as you have been told, exit the game the regular way.

It's not bad design, quite the opposite. You can 'pause' at bonfires, by quitting the game (well, going to the main menu), by standing around with no enemies in sight and not embered.

If you could just pause whenever, half the game's online functions wouldn't even work.

AS I CLEARLY STATED. I am talking about offline. And it's clearly bad game design if you have to quit the game everytime you want to pause quickly because you have things to do.

Doesn't matter what you stated and what not.

It has good reason for being like it is, and there is no way around it.

If you can't accept that, you are free to play a different game.

This is not snark, but you are resisting a perfectly fine function, or lack thereof, and very few people have an issue with this.

If you can't deal with that, that's too bad, but nothing you are going to change by calling it 'dumb'

There are items in-game that could help you with your problems.

Tell me one good reason why there shouldn't be a pause button in offline mode.

Asking for a Pause Button in 2k18.

What's next? Pause Button in WoW and LoL?
Don Lobo Apr 18, 2018 @ 5:11am
You do know the game autosaves virtually every time you move, right? You want a pause? Just hit Quit right in the menu. It takes literally a couple of seconds when you get the hang of the motion and when you come back you'll be right there where you left the game at.

Considering online integration is seamless (and in order to keep it that way regardless of whether you want to play online or not) I’d say it’s actually a very simple and easy to use solution to not having a pause button.

But that's one of the problems I have with the no pause thing. If you can do that (which according to you basically is pausing) then why not just implement a pause button then? It's just pausing with extra steps with isn't a good thing from a design point of view. I think the truth is most souls fans are just too proud of the games and refuse to see obvious design flaws.

There is no pause button in a "multiplayer" game.
