Everyone would just see "Invasion" and hit the pause button.
You can, as you have been told, exit the game the regular way.
It's not bad design, quite the opposite. You can 'pause' at bonfires, by quitting the game (well, going to the main menu), by standing around with no enemies in sight and not embered.
If you could just pause whenever, half the game's online functions wouldn't even work.
It has good reason for being like it is, and there is no way around it.
If you can't accept that, you are free to play a different game.
This is not snark, but you are resisting a perfectly fine function, or lack thereof, and very few people have an issue with this.
If you can't deal with that, that's too bad, but nothing you are going to change by calling it 'dumb'
What's next? Pause Button in WoW and LoL?
Considering online integration is seamless (and in order to keep it that way regardless of whether you want to play online or not) I’d say it’s actually a very simple and easy to use solution to not having a pause button.
