Nhh?
Well yeah if they don't know about the spear of the church item, the guardian is killed, and the other guy is bad, then sure. That's a lot of ifs though. I watched this poor guy in full Havel's gear trying to survive and I honestly felt bad.
In the past I've wound up fighting it online a few times, then just doing it in offline mode to save myself a headache. lol. The NPC boss is a piece of cake.
The host gets a full 15 Estus while the player gets none and has to rely on time and missable heals from the Guardians that only patch you up roughly halfway. Smart players normally go for the Painted Guardians first to cripple any heals the boss may receive.
Here's where it really gets nasty: the host may have phantoms with them, which they often do. Those phantoms also have 7 Estus vs your 0. Those Ritual Spear Fragments can only be used one time apiece for the duration of the battle, don't deal a huge amount of damage and can be dodged quite easily. Those projectiles are easy to dodge that the player gets, deal little damage, and are really only good for staggering a host that's about to start chugging down a vial of Estus.
It's a fantastic boss battle IMO. You think this is unfair? Glad you weren't around when Demon Souls was big. There was a boss battle much like Spears of the Church called The Old Monk. A player got summoned, had access to all of their heals, and got a damage buff. How's that for fair? Granted, against a competent PVP player that knows what they're doing, you're going to struggle. You said yourself that you're not that good at PVP, that's why you lost.
I actually won. It was really easy. I was summoned as the boss for that round, not the one challenging.
That's the problem. Even as someone who's not that great at PvP I can still win reliably when summoned as a spear.
This isn't about me. As I said previously -
is anyone even reading the OP?
I said I was summoned as the boss and won, and as someone who's only decent at PvP, I still managed to. As a challenger I try not to unless I just get tired of losing. I think I've only ever beat the boss as the challenger ONCE online.
PS...I am not even in the covenant, I was just lucky (?) enough to get summoned in as the boss. Must have been a slow night.
And I disagree with that. I find it fairly even to fight a Spear by myself. As long they're not laggy with absolutely tremendous phantom range, I don't have too much trouble taking one out, but it's not an absolute steamroll against them; I actually lose sometimes if I let myself get overwhelmed with their healing sources. In fact, the biggest problem I get are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who alt f4 the moment they die, so then I have to fight a full health Halflight because someone's so bad at the game they can't win 1v2 with all their buffs and are too embarassed to take their loss.
Having a single phantom helping you during the fight makes it so much easier, to have someone else handle each Painting Guardian at a time.
As for player summoned...I don't know what the intention was supposed to be, but every single time I go into this boss, the spear player always either runs in circles for eternity (and they were chugging something if it wasn't supposed to be estus) and end up dying anyway, or its some noob using a dragonslayer greataxe, and never managing to hit anything with it because the WA takes 4 years to initiate. Still not fun, just a mild annoyance like any other invader, only slightly less so because they can't run off and hide behind mobs now.
I still see this boss (and gravetender) as being just an excuse to not put any effort into actually designing a boss. The fact that the spear covenant doesn't help get you summoned (in fact anyone who places any sign down in the ringed city can get summoned) kind of verifies this for me.
Sorry
You could say this victory feels...
hollow.
Sorry, bad pun, but wow. (I did fight 3 previous times, and I nearly killed them each time tho)
