[LORE QUESTION] Why were the Abyss Watchers killing each other?

According to the description of their Armor, they were a legion that, supposedly worked together fighting the Abyss.

Yet, you come in seeing that, they were not really doing a good job and instead are trying to kill each other. But why?
Did they all go insane? Is the main one you are fighting non-hollow and the others are hollow? (you can see red glowing eyes on the mini-boss ones)
Why exactly? I am just curious.

the one that helps you will actually still attack you. the reason they fight though is because they snuff out all signs of manus or something. Basically they are all infected by that abyss (the manus) and as a result will kill each other. They are infected by the thing they are trying to get rid of so yah.

yah, thats why the reward for their souls can be transposed to the wolf sword of Artorias (I think that's like a fan service and callback)

Well it's wolf night greatsword, but yeah, Artorias's greatsword has been in all 3 souls games.(I'm not 100% on the first game though)

A bit of Artorias's soul is in each of the abyss watchers, if you notice at stage 2 of the boss fight, the final abyss watcher has Artorias's fighting style, meaning all of the soul fragments from each abyss watcher went into 1.

The main Watcher who is the actual boss has red eyes. This is the sign of an abyssal creature. After aeons of watching the abyss, some of the abyss watchers became corrupted by it and started killing their own.

During the first phase of the fight, the other watchers will attack both you and the red eye watcher.

EDIT: maybe I got the ones with red eyes reversed, the point is, the ones with red eyes fight the ones without

If you want a more detailed explanation: The abysswatchers fought all signs of the abyss, and the dark in general for that matter. They would burn entire countries to the ground, and fought in such a manner than was difficult for any assailant, light or dark, to adapt to. Bear in mind, by the time we see the abyss watchers, there are two left standing, all the rest are on the floor, dead or undead. We aren't fighting the full legion, just the last few remnants. And while the first two are not visibly affected by the dark (visibly being the key word here), the third one very much is (glowing red eyes), and will attack the first two because of that, though he will still attack you if you aggro him, its just he would rather attack the other two as he sees them as more of a threat.
