I used joni's blessing (or whatever it is called) to give me more hearts. It's very inconvinient to heal during that fight (but possible). Also a charm for more mana per hit and a charm for more damage for magic.
With so many hearts the Hollow Knight can be spammed down without even dodging and your health replenishes in the transition between fights, but not mana(!), so be sure to be full.
Open the fight up with one(!) shriek, then hit him normally. Don't use magic until the second phase starts (spears from the ground). Spam magic as soon as it starts and don't use it once again in the third phase (when spears start falling from the sky). The third phase is very easy and you need to just jump hit him, while saving up as much mana as you can for the fourth phase, which you need to get over quickly. Even having full six charges won't end the fourth phase, so prepare for some sick dodging.
The fifth phase is the last one and you need just to hit him once, but he will constantly fire at you. Be careful.
I offer a "spell-free" guide to defeating bosses that details attack patterns, dodging strategies, attack opportunities, and healing opportunities if you're interested in how to take the Radiance down with focus on using the nail (scroll to near the very bottom):

My preferred charm set for this fight (and to be honest all the late-game boss fights) is: Quick Slash, Stalwart Shell, Mark of Pride, Steady Body, and Grubsong.
Quick Slash is also necessary for the second phase if you want it to go quickly.
For charms, I went with Shaman Stone, Lifeblood Heart and Core, Thorns of Agony and Grubsong. My play style is generally brute force, so this combo will get you extra health and spell power while giving the maximum benefit for any damage that you happen to take.
Anytime you get a chance to use Abyss Shriek, use it - especially early on.
When you get hit, Thorns of Agony will return damage and Grubsong will get you some extra souls.
Take your chances to heal when you can.
Shape of Unn (to heal up back to full and avoid swords easier) + Quick Slash (whatever you pick, this one is mandatory except for spell builds perhaps) + Grubberfly's Elegy (fell in love with this one since using it for the Fragile Flower quest) + unbreakable strength. Not sure if I had one notch left for grubsong.
And learn how to avoid the sword slashes, the homing rockets (jump up) and make sure to cancel everything and stand in the right place when the bright light announces the 3 ray attacks.
Even though I did lose my heart fairly quickly (cancelling elegy) I did make it in the end just by quick slashing in phase 2 while standing on the platform directly beneath the radiance.
I wonder if I should use the Grimm Child as a weak player.
