Losing your shade breaks your soul meter, removing the ability to fill the last 3rd of it. This means with a full gauge you're only able to heal twice or use two spells instead of the normal three. This may not seem like that big a deal but in the middle of a boss fight or tough area, losing that bit of extra soul can mean the difference between life or death. You can still play the game this way but I don't think anyone would recommend it outside of a challenge run, definitely not on your first play through.
Also, while I don't know what part of the game you're in, there are endgame reasons to want more geo, and while you could get that much without dying and losing it, it's a lot easier if you either reclaim your shade or use the bank.
The most I have spent in the game at one time, thusfar, was at a certain fountain, where I randomly gave up the maximum allowed amount of 3k, for which I "won" a soul vessel fragment. Quite an expensive piece, I think. The nailsmith, also collects some thousands of Geo for mastering of the blade, assuming one has the ore required.
Good currency that seems death-proof, are the trinkets, therefore I assume if there is no immediate need for money, it is better not to sell these to the Collector too soon.
Furthermore, there are the rescued Grubs. I also assume that if there is no immediate need for money, it is unnecessary to go collect the rewards too soon.
I seemed to have competely forgotten it even exists and can't even remember de banker's name.
