I can't dodge, when the lava covers the side of the screen i feel like its just based on luck whether I can find a gap or not.I looked it up and whenever I find videos of it people have dash or some sort of wall jump. I have no idea how to obtain these,

It is an optional boss. If you don't have at least the dash yet, then you are facing it way too early. You will get the dash after defeating the second mandatory boss, which is in a different area than you are currently in. To get to that area you will need to face the mandatory boss in the Forgotten Crossroads first.

I killed that one I think, its the one thats near the train guy right? I opened a map and it had a boss synbol on it and I killed a big suit of armour and unlocked a magic spell

Defeating Hornet unlocks the dash. Jump over Mawlek's head on the other side when he spits lava.

Pogoing up the spikes to get into the fight early is sequence breaking: you’re doing the fight much earlier than expected. The intended way to get in there is via wall jump, which is only reachable post-dash.

Progression Hint: go up one ‘floor’ in the tall shaft with the platforms and head left through there

The thing killed me a couple of times when I used the spike pogo to get to it.
Pogoing on top of it to get to the other side when you realize it's going to spray an entire side. After it sprays and before it falls should work gl
