Which game is best?
Hollow knight, Ori and the blind forest, Shovel knight, Dead cells, or Owl boy?

Depends, this is a metroidvania, same with owlboy, unlike dead cells that is rogue like.

I would pick this up over the others imo, since unlike dead cells this is complete, and has much more content and hours of gameplay than owlboy, shovel knight or ori.

I also felt like this is superior in almost everything than the other metroidvanias mentioned here.

But thats my opinion ofc, and you shouldnt rely only on my opinion.

Why these games specifically?

Shovel Knight and Dead Cells aren't even the same genre of game

Just picked this and Ori up, I will say Ori is way better from the get go. Better graphics, atmosphere, and music. The controls are also smoother.

The jumping in this game is pretty gummy, it really bothers me, I'm tempting of refunding it.

Play just an hour of Hollow Knight and you won't want to refund it.
Also, I don't know what "gummy controls" means, but if you're experiencing input lag, just shrink the window size.

I have never played dead cells. But out of those others, Ori is the best by far. I just started Hollow Knight, and I'm close to refunding it, the map system is horrible.

How so?

First off, I would throw Dead Cells out. Not because it's bad, but because it's a roguelite and it's still in alpha. Of the other four:

Shovel Knight is awesome. Buy it. Right now.

All three of the others are very good. However I liked Owlboy the least. Of the other two, Ori has fantastic platforming, but weak combat. HK has good platforming and good combat. If you really like platforming choose Ori. If you like a more balanced approach, choose HK.

My short answer would be: buy Shovel Knight, Ori and Hollow Knight, in that order.

I absolutely love all those game you mentioned, except dead cells which I picked up recently and havent played yet but from what I have seen it looks fun.

They are all really great games in their own right. You should totally pick them all up on sale while you can. Ori is by far the most polished imo. Shovel Knight is super good too. Owlboy is fun but slow paced. Hollow Knight is EVIL! It will hurt you all over your feels.

There's not too much point in comparing them since all of these games are considered to be excellent, and all for slightly different reasons. It's not like comparing Symphony of the Night to Circle of the Moon to Aria of Sorrow, where all of those titles are striving for very similar creative goals. Ori will appeal more to people who love emotional stories, art, and music. Shovel Knight excels at being a simple, focused, much more linear style of platformer. Hollow Knight is a truly vast and sprawling adventure that evokes the feeling of the original Dark Souls. Dead Cells will appeal more to fans of roguelite gameplay. And Owlboy, despite not being a game that I love myself, has sublime pixel art and animation, with bucketloads of charm to hook people in.

There are equally valid reasons for different people to rank all of those games in any order. It's easier just to say that they're all great and leave it at that.

Dead Cells is pretty solid tbh, but it's a complete different genre

Shovel Knight is awesome but more of a linear platformer.

I didn't lik Owlboy, personally. It's a platformer that removes the point of platforming by making you fly infinitely. Boring.

Between Ori and Hollow Knight.. Ori's got better visuals and ambiance/music, but weaker combat. Hollow Knight's more of a mix between Ori and Dark Souls, in my opinion. Both are great, though.

the best comparison is...

Hollow Knight , Ori and the blind forest , Guacamelee STCE and Momodora Reverie in the Moonlight

I'd say ori is a better packaged experience where some better decisions were made. Collecting maps and having to use a notch to mark your character on the map and having to recollect your ghost after dying are all not fun at all in HK. However the game is very large and very long and has a lot of fun boss fights and feels more like a metroidy game where you have a sword instead of a gun.

Ori has worse (like really bad) combat, but the movement feels really good, the platforming is more interesting and the game has excellent flow. Plus it has better art, music, and story. There are no bosses, so the lack of combat is usually fine once you get bash and can just fly past enemies. That happens pretty early too. It also has a checkpoint system so that when you die, you don't have to spend any time tracking back to the spot you died at which is good because it is a lot easier to die in that game.

I prefer ori, but HK is also great.

I like Hollow Knight's map system personally, save for the compass taking a notch. I think it's just dumb to take away the core feature of a map and make you pay for it.
