That's how I beat him at least... other than that I think he's a tad too hard - he doesn't really have many openings, usually only when he uses the shield spin attack. But his health got nerfed in the Beta, so it's a bit better I'd say.
That's how I do it, but yeah it caught me off guard when they took the ground away.
I feel your pain and share this sentiment. This part specifically.
Don't forget the walls for extra mobility, and your spells for the second phase. It's not even worth healing to be honest (when fighting him in the Halls of gods, he deals only one hit in the pantheon so go for heals if you want there). Go for nail hits only when you have a good angle, and his shield spinning at least makes him immobile and not throw stuff at you for a few seconds so you get a bit more room to do what you want. You can wait out that attack if you're more comfortable with it, and ignore it if you aren't.
I wouldn't say having a luck based boss is fine, but removing the floor as a questionable way of increasing difficutly is definitely a design move that has me raising an eyebrow. I definitely don't like such decision.
Thanksfully there's a bench right before him, and the next one is right before PV, so if you want to change your loadout, you get a good opportunity... though you still gotta deal with some of the strongest bosses with said build, like NKG.
Maybe nail arts can help?
Be patient on his first phase and try not to take too much damage so you have a full or nearly full soul container during his second phase. Once he gets to his second phase, try spam him with as many spells as you can and try not to get hit. He should be near death by that point if you landed most of your shot so all you have to do is get a few hits in with your nail and you're done.
"So, how do we make it harder?"
"Just remove the floor, the player has to figure out how to beat it, good luck"
Not only this, but the way you take damage isn't from his attacks. It's from him moving in your general direction which is completely luck whether or not that happens. And the nails that he spawns often spawn on top of you especially if you're dashing or falling which also sucks. Why on Earth did they put this into the pantheon of hallownest at the end?
The ones I'm struggling with the most on Ascended are Markoth, Sly, and the Radiance.
Sly isn't normally too bad, its when he does double damage that he becomes a problem.
The Radiance I have beaten ONCE on Attuned, but that was mostly thanks to really lucky RNG.
I just hate Ascended Markoth so much, nothing I do seems to work against his BS.
I tried a summoner build, but the platforms are way to small for Weaversong to be of help unless I am directly above him at all times, and Glowing Womb keeps targeting the shield instead of Markoth.
I tried a few spellcaster builds, but Dreamwielder is useless against him, so I have to use Soul Catcher/Eater instead. Then I have the problem of hitting him enough to cast while having to avoid his shield and nails(both of which get twice as dangerous in phase 2), aswell as making sure I don't fall.
Otherwise as suggested before, for ascended/radiant Markoth, your best bet is to go full spell build, then build soul by using nail only in p1, and then nuke from safety in p2. This should kill him or close to. (This also works well for Collector ascended/radiant.)
Some of the hardest bosses, run killer's and all bindings pains are Collector, Zote, Markoth and AR. All bosses that are RNG heavy. You know something is up when mid pantheon bosses are more unsettling than NKG or PV.
Play very slowly. Stand still, wait for the next nail to target, then jump in a calculated way so you don't remain in the nail's path. If you're near the edge of the screen and you don't see it, assume it's offscreen. You can take as long as you want; nails are very unlikely to hit you unless you rush.
If you want, you can just wait for Markoth to stop summoning nails to do his shield spin attack, dash through its orbit as it expands outward, and hit him with a dash slash/great slash followed by another great slash, then dash out.
Once you get to the second phase, use Shade Soul when he's pretty far away from you to get double hits. Dash slash if you can't win with Shade Soul alone.
