By the ancestral mound behind a broken wall are white things that run away. What are they?

I made it all the way up the wall. There was a sound of mourning. I broke the wall and there were two white things standing around a dead one on the ground. They run away from me. I accidentally'd one of them

It's in the area too the right of the shaman. There is a horned creature icon on the map

They are maggots, like the False Knight. They are mourning their friend you killed. They are pathetic. Do you have the Hunter's Journal yet?

I just checked the journal. Do they serve any purpose? If I kill the 3rd one I will unlock the journal entry for that enemy.
