Wall Jumping and/or Double Jump?
I am only in the first area, but have noticed more than a few spots where I can't seem to jump high enough, such as where you first find Sly and there is a ledge to the right with a bench. My question is if the jumping improvements are unlocked later, or I am just failing to see some input?
Hitting things with the nail doesn't do anything to help, either.

As Damos said, there are jumping improvements, but you can also cheat the system by pogo bouncing on enemies or even your shade to bypass certain... problems. You can pogo bounce by jumping over something and pressing down and strike. This will elevate you higher. It also resets your airborn "once per jump" abilities. There are eventually sections where this behavior is practically expected.

Yeah, I knew that but never thought of using my shade for it...
I have only just beaten the 2nd boss, gotten the Thorns of Agony charm and now have arrived at what seems to be a room of thorns with just a bat with armour and a single platform... Pogoing on it just ends up with me hitting the thorns on the roof, and even with jump + dash I can't reach any safe ground.
Suggestions? I would look it up but I don't want large amounts spoiled, I am enjoying this game too much.

If it seems you can't progress in that room then usually it means that room is for later. There is a lot of backtracking to previous places whenever you get a new movement upgrade

There are places where the dash gets you. Try the bottom left of the Forgotten Crossroads.

Are you familiar with Metroid? Or exploration-based games in general?

You are going to come across very, very many areas you cannot access just yet. During the course of the game, you will find more and more movement-based abilities, and attacks that function as "keys" (like using Vengeful Spirit to kill Elder Baldurs).

If you find a place you cannot access, make a mental note (or a literal note!) and move on. Once you have more abilities, you will realize that you can access a variety of places you might not even have thought were paths before.

Relax, and keep moving forward. And if you're ever stuck, talk to the Elderbug in Dirtmouth, he will provide clues on where to go next.

EDIT: Almost forgot, git gud

Only a couple spots in the White Palace (that it looked possible to bypass in another way) and I believe you need to pogo across some spikes to get a grub in the Crossroads. There are some rooms where you're expected to pogo across enemies but it's so much more efficient to just return with the super dash and/or acid immunity upgrades and bypass all that nonsense.

Yes, I am familiar; very familiar. I am also familiar with my own stupidity and ignorance making me THINK I can't access areas, when I fact I can if I actually play the game properly.

I'm not sure you can get to Nailmaster Sheo (in Greenpath) without pogo jumping on the last set of Durandoos.

You'll get upgrades later that make it possible.

Maybe it's possible to get around those thorns with just a combination of Dash, Crystal Dash, Mothwing Cloak without pogo-ing off the Durandoos, but at the very least it looks to me like that would be a lot more difficult to time correctly. Did you have a different upgrade in mind? I don't think you can pass through them using Shade Cloak.

I reached him with only crystal dash, dash, I think (maybe mantis claw as well). You don't need double-jump or anything else.

However, it is extremely frustrating to do so, and requires near perfect timing and interrupting crystal dashes mid way. (Right at the end is a spiked wall immediately at the entrance to a room which you need to interrupt your crystal dash just before the room change, but not too early or you'll fall into the spikes).

Cool, I stand corrected! But I do maintain pogo-jumping is likely to be easier in that case, at least if you have a weapon-lengthening charm equipped.

is there any time in this game where i could progress to a point that I cant return from and not have the necessary upgrades? I beat the fake knight and got locked into that stupid area by the wizard lady and I am nervous about continuing to go forward, up until now I have been back tracking a ton to make sure I don't miss anything.

I believe the only case where that can happen is if you don't buy the lantern before going to the darker places - it can make navigating a nightmare, but it's still possible.
The area where you are is perfectly fine - continue on, brave soul!
