Save game system sucks
Lost about 2 hours of gameplay because this mess of a system wasn't adequately explained through the tutorials. If you're going to do a console game for the pc, there needs to be some explanation of the mechanics when you diverge from the patterns that are used by 99% of the industry.

I'm going to give the game another go, but am really regreting my purchase decision at this point.

The save button is right there in the menu

I saved 30s before I died. I loaded and appeared back in town, which was 2 hours ago. You're snarky respnse doesn't address the problem. We should have multiple save points including a quicksave and an autosave.

There are two load options....retry(load) last save...or retry(load) last checkpoint..which one do you think you should pick?

If an auto save just ocurred the answer isnt as clear as you would like it to be. Oh and the fact that if you pick one and can't go back to the other isn't all that clear either.

The whole pattern isn't explained well and isn't something found in pc software so the lack of an explanation is compounded. You can be an apologist all you want, but it doesn't make you right.

Yeah it sucks, but in regards to your two hours of gameplay - sounds like you selected retry from last checkpoint, unless you never saved while playing. To load your last autosave/manual save, quit to the main menu and select load game. If you didn't manually save, your last save will be the checkpoint save which happens when you enter a new area or sleep at an inn or use the rift. In this game, you need to manually save a ton.

Its a prettty generic save system to be honest. Don't see what the big hangup is.

It's one of the worst save systems ever implemented. To be honest, I never understood the hype around this game. There are several questionable design decisions in this whole title.

I am pretty sure the save system was a conscious decision. It prevents save scumming and being forced to live with your decisions.

Just take the lose of 2 hours of gameplay as a learning lesson. Save often and when you die click Retry instead of load from last checkpoint.

Also, if you are using a controller you can hit start and then select and you will make a quick save. For keyboard I think it's exit then lowercase L or uppercase I (can't remember).

Also, if you use the dinput8 mod it will constantly make back ups of your save for you.

OP is right, the save system is garbage, and denying it is cope.
It NEVER says "checkpoint" on any save, so the player is left wondering which one matters, and ya, choosing checkpoint will easily screw you the first time you try it.

Just in case you're interested in knowing rather than slandering:

- regular save will always be the the most recent save to load. That's cause when checkpoint saving happens it overwrites both save and checkpoint slot.

- idk if you are substances abuser, functionally illiterate or a SIS, but the game definitely tells you which type of saving happens. Refer to this article for exmples.
https://dragonsdogma.fandom.com/wiki/Save_Game#Checkpoint_Saves

- choosing the checkpoint will only screw you should you... choose to load a checkpoint. And at no point in the game you are prompted to loaded a checkpoint - even the death screen gives you the option to Retry first, then change difficulty and only then load a checkpoint. And every entry in said menu has a description attached to it.
