Fast travel works via items called Ferrystones and Portcrystals. They're just unlocked later in the game.
So yeah, in the beginning you'll have to run most places, so if that's not for you, I'd suggest not getting the game.
Ok that's pretty much all I wanted to know... So you can only fast travel to certain areas? Like important cities/castles,etc
In the beginning only Cassardis and Gran Soren. You'll acquire portcrystals at various points in the game, which are then used on the ground. Using them will drop them on the ground, making you able to teleport to it.
There is a limited number of port locations, however you the player get to decide where those locations will be.
but when they intrduced the Dark arisen, they fixed the issue by adding the limit, and since the dark arisen is a lot harder, regular story mode was a bit easier compare to the new mode.
but yea, you have to explore the areas, and place the portals at strategic location so you don't have to travel a lot with escort quests ;)
and don't forget, discover the Safe areas as soon as possible, they are worth it
