I wouldn't want the 16 bro Militia effect, if you copy that template.
I'm not sure about other origin effects. The main one being to limit to Cripples/Beggars for the challenge, I did post a similar idea in the "more origin ideas" thread in suggestions, but I'm trying to keep this as simple to do as possible.
Text if you need could be something like:
"You used to be a professional soldier, but were injured terribly in a great battle. Crippled, you were let go from the military. Finding work as a cripple is no easy feat, and your only skills are in warfare. Mercenary companies ignore you for more able bodied men, and you cannot find any work in town either. Finally, you decided that if no one would hire you then you would start your own mercenary company filled with the other rejects of society and show the world that you can still fight."
Picture could just be the Cripple or Beggar background icon?
This is what I put in the suggestions thread, but I don't want it to be too complicated or a lot of work to do.
That's more complicated though. I'm fine with just limiting the backgrounds to Cripple/Beggar and no other special effects or setup going on. Whatever is the easiest way to achieve that I'm cool with.
Of course, I only meant for the background limitations!
Sure, I just thought of emulating the other origins cons & pros. This one is yours, we'll do as you want.
Brilliant, haha!
All right!
Great, I can work with that!
What should I do? Keep your more recent idea or implement your old suggestion? Mix them? Whatever you prefer is fine with me.
I'm not too concerned about starting gear or situation. Companions level funds is fine and a couple of starting bros or whatever. Not sure how difficult it is to edit that kind of stuff. If the guys just roll with random Beggar/Cripple gear that's fine. They can just be randomly rolled dudes. No specific traits or stars need to be set.
You don't have to implement any special effects or anything that I suggested in that origin idea. It was more flavor stuff than being super impactful anyway. Keeping it simple is good.
> a few outcasts: I thought of [1-3] beggars (random)
> half the resources: tools, medicine, food, (and daily wages?)
> Glorious Past: cripples have a chance to reveal themselves as king's guards, beggars as disowned nobles
What do you think? It makes the origin a bit easier, not sure you like it. Seems well thematic to me though.
Is halving tools usage even possible? Sounds pretty strong actually. Really good economy buff, or maybe I'm overvaluing it?
Glorious past sounds like a lot of fun. I'm all for it if it isn't too hard to implement, but the chance should probably be low, or have a decent cooldown if you are writing an event to get it in? Either way, I never buy Disowned Nobles and King's Guard is a myth so getting either one would be really fun.
The run would still be plenty challenging, but this makes it more interesting too, so I like these ideas.
I completely agree. I actually thought of a rare quest like event. Reclaiming some kind of heritage or facing an old enemy in battle, maybe? What do you think? Would you be willing to write something to deepen the story behind the origin?
Swell! I'll start the work, then!
How would that even work? Is it a flavor based dialogue event with the promotion occurring as a result? Or would it spawn a battle? A random battle could be tough depending on the state and formation of your team on when the battle occurs, and what would happen if the bro in question died in the battle? Sounds tricky.
The first version is ready: https://ufile.io/n22twbex.
As always, mod hooks needed...

It can all be done! Not really difficult to mod in but it would take time to design and write. I'm not sure what would be the best course myself, so I'll leave that option up to you if you want to make the origin more entertaining.
So for the first version, I just made generic events. They have placeholder text so if you want to write something, feel free to! I suggest you extract the files, open and edit them for balance tuning.
The events currently have a 33 days cooldown with a score that's tied to the number of candidates, double for the disowned noble one because they're much weaker than King's Guard. The KG event can only trigger with WoTN installed as per the wishes of OH.
I opted for 1/3 less resources (food, medicine, tools) consumption instead. I altered the functions that govern the consumption to achieve the effect. Food needed a float format... I also made it so that the tooltips would display correct values. Hopefully, everything will be fine.
I had to trim the origin description because the text would span out of the box.
There is currently no intro event for this origin, so if you want, you can write one. It's the first window that pops up when you start a new campaign, tells you about the origin backstory, etc.
I increased the number of beggars and cripples in the draft list by a lot, since they're the only two backgrounds left to hire. Higher numbers may still be needed. Give me your feedback on that!
Feel free to tune other settings too, like starting resources, renown, etc. I didn't make too many modifications, so it's all pretty standard...
I'll give it a try today.
The two possible special events will draw folks to include plenty of Cripples and Beggars in the group, this will also allow you to reset the character pool to normal levels. It would also give folks a chance to experience the other random events that they miss by never hiring the other three backgrounds.
I am not normally a fan of Mods, but this sort of thing is just fantastic. Bravo!
