Backgrounds you carry ONLY for Events
I must say carrying Backgrounds solely for Events has become far more difficult while playing Lone Wolf - given the 12 member roster restriction. Nonetheless, I am trying. Here is what I carry only for Events (but not all at the same time!). You can see a game like this require a long playthrough to reach a payoff point:

*Swordmaster: He can teach multiple times - albeit to a different pupil - which is why he is attractive. I use him as an "off-Sergeant" and pikeman.

*Brawler: His use is far more restricted: He can only teach once - and only to someone level 2 or lower. So I sit new recruits and remove them from combat until the Brawler has taught them. And once he does so, the Brawler is replaced.

*Bowyer: Obviously the Masterwork Bow - though the new named bows that reduce Fatigue per shot are far better. I am debating whether to carry this guy at all in future playthroughs - given the fact that in a long playthrough I will eventually find a named bow. Besides, the Masterwork Bow Event can only fire once in a game (not per Bowyer!) - regardless of whether you fail or succeed in making a Masterwork version!

*Cultists: Davkul crap - duh! But you need 6 Cultists, and that's too many for such a mediocre Background. So what I do is merely recruit 1 or 2 original Cultists and wait for conversion Events. Unfortunately, I've gotten 0 conversions in my current game, after 200-plus days.

*Monks: Lots of good Events - primarily among them are the fact that he will continue to feed my Cultists Resolve and the fact that he crafts the blessed water stuff, apparently infinitely. Since he is not combat-worthy, I use him as Sergeant and mainly spam Rally, nets, and apply antidotes and bandages as needed.

*Caravan Hand: For the caravan slot expansion Event - and then dismissed.

What about you guys? Once again, I am beginning to question carrying some of these guys, given that I will likely only play Lone Wolf from now on. Also, frankly the expansion of Events make it even more painful to wait on certain Events to trigger.

Finally, there is one Background I used to always avoid because of Background Events - the Sellsword. However, I may recruit just one from now on, because I will likely not have cash problems with just 12 characters max.

Absolutely nothing. Aside from how you get them, they don't appear to have any further events, or special abilities or anything. Stat-wise they're basically on the same level as a bastard, so it isn't much of an upgrade switching out for one from the event.

Does the assassin at least cost less to keep in the company? I know bastards are one of the pricier guys to keep around.

Well the lone wolf character is a hedge knight and hedge knights have an event where they boost the stats of a squire. I saw someone in the forums say there's a unique event between the lone wolf hedge knight and a squire, but I haven't seen it. So I suppose a squire would be one to have for an event.

No, they're a few coins more.

Don´t forget the historian.
For certain classes like historian, monk and thief I tend to look for them with traits, that makes them always content being in reserve (craven for example). Then I leave them there in the reserve, get my events and special options and place a real fighter where they normally would have been in the shieldwall. I use them like a retinue.

PS: Hedgeknight gives you also a special option in that "you find a teenager brigand gang plundering a dead merchant body"....

What does the Historian do?

Not right on topic, sorry.... but some professions give you alternate choices in events. Like the historian or the monk.

Retired Soldier is often a good choice as a billman. Together with a decent apprentice he can train him

1. Historian gives you an extra choice when buying the map - you wont have to pay if its fake.

2. Together with graverobber or gravedigger also some event for an unique i have read.

And dont get a Bowyer. Hes not worth it.

His stats simply suck ass - i think even a poacher is better. And even tho i havent had the masterwork bow in ages i do not know if hes worth it.

(quick check - poacher got 3 less max ranged skill apparently but is slightly better in init/fat/resolve)

Yeah, bowyer has a really wide range, the highest being higher than any other ranged background (excl. hunter of course) but the lowest being very low. I usually only hire bowyers for the hunting bow early on if I can't find a hunter.

I don't really think it's "worth" hiring one purely for the bow event.

The event triggers if you ONLY have the Lone Wolf, and it's just a squire offering to join you for free.

Goodness; you actually said something I agree with - for once! ;)

So you likely won't get it, given that you will have your roster full between day 100-200 perhaps, and there are now too many Events to ensure a single, discrete Event to happen during that frame. I don't expect to get the King's Guard Event either.
