It applies only to retired soldiers and swordmasters. Well, I'm not sure about retired soldiers. Definitely swordmasters but they're both classified as old so I'd reckon retired soldiers are also affected.
My retired soldiers didnt want to yet and i really like using em.

1. Swordmaster is the strongest background regarding melee skill and defense - each one can easily get over 100 melee skill if he hasnt really bad rolls
His only weaknesses are the low hp and the EXTREMELY low fatigue, so it kinda sucks if you dont get one with strong/iron lung or at least 2 stars in fatigue;
2. The swordmaster can actually train your guys if the wiki stays correct. Not completely sure tho for whom which training events are actually triggered - only know the archer training for sellsword and fatigue training with brawler for sure

And i think we both wrote already about the "old" trait in another thread steven? I also hate it and would prefer to use it as a result of too many temporary injuries;
