If you want to apply a patch (presuming your version is lower than the patch), you have to extract the patch archive into resources/app folder of your bb-edit.

I downloaded it ... how does it work? I've already worked out how to edit almost everything in the save file directly using HxD, but it's rather slow when there's a lot you want to edit, and I thought this might be faster, but I'm at a loss with how to use it.

Did you follow the on screen instructions? Open your save file with CTRL+L, then input the number of mercenaries in your roster in the right box and click 'Parse'. That should do the trick, unless you have items/injuries that are not yet accounted for.

I didn't see any on-screen instructions. I just got a blank download page with an error message, but I was able to download the file anyway. But then I just have the .7z file but (apparently) nothing suitable to open it with ... so I don't even get as far as the instructions.

Are the fixes for the .5-.11 versions meant to be required before it'll run?

Does BB-Edit run from within the .7z file using Winrar/7Zip, or do you need to extract all the contents before trying to run it?

The fixes are for those who downloaded previous versions. If you downloaded 1.0.11, you should be fine. And you really should unpack the archive somewhere.
