If for whatever reason that isn't working for you, I believe you can learn it from Fatebinder Regulus (talk about magic) at the start of act II in Tunon's court. Or buy it from the Village of Stone.
But if you want it in the first Act you have to talk to Lantry. Fortunately it requires no favor with him. Its also probably worth mentioning that there's no Achievement for never having another person in your group.
Nope, he won't teach you unless you take it as a bargain for defending him in the combat.
Here is how to do it:
1. Demand to have him set free. Scarlet Chorus boss will want a trial by combat.
2. You must say it's not your business messing with Scarelt Chorus rules.
3. Lantry will fear for his life and promise to teach you the skill if you fight for him.
4. After the fight remind him of your deal: "You promised to tech me magic and this happens now!"
You don't have to learn it right away after the fight. Just talk to him when you want it. Personally when going solo I always wait untill I finish ACT I to learn healing. It's not really needed, not even in tripple crown run.
