Every game out there is a rip-off of Half-Life
Half-Life is barebones junk.

Play Operation Black Mesa / Guard Duty when that GAME arrives on Steam.
Without HALF-LIFE...."Black Mesa" wouldn't Exist Genius. Crowbar Collective literally ripped off Half Life. You skip all the way to the end of the "Development Life Cycle" and act Like your the games creator.
That "Bare bones junk" that you referred to as Half-Life, is the Core of Black Mesa. Yet I haven't seen one line of credit in this forum to Valve for creating a game that has a high level of replayibility, Creativity,Character design, level design, Intuitive game play, a solid Code base (just to name a few).
So ...While you guys are busy with that Golf Clap, I'm going to say if you want a "Similar Game," try the Real Deal, "HALF-LIFE"

I miss 90's sci fi.
Me too. It can't come back soon enough.

To elaborate on the comparison: just like Half-Life, Oddworld has an industrial setting as well as an interesting alien wildlife setting.

They also share common themes. Alien Subjugation/Liberation being the main one.

Secondarily,
Gabe Newell discusses the sexual theme of Half-Life in the book Raising the Bar where he states that many of the monsters are designed to elicit a response from the innate homophobia of 14 year old boys. See this https://half-life.fandom.com/wiki/Mr._Friendly

Meanwhile,
Oddworld is all about the horrors of a meat processing plant.

So,
You could say they share a Carnal theme.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

How about Brutal Doom/Project Brutality. Or Death Wish for Blood (DW has the most atmospheric levels in any fan made content I have ever played).
WG Realms: Demon Throne just released, Hedon, Adventures of Square, Shadow of the Wool Ball, Rise of the Wool Ball, Ashes 2066, Ashes 2066: Dead Man walking these are all standalone GzDoom engine mods afaik.

Valve gave Crowbar Collective their blessing for this remake, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to sell what you call a "ripoff" of their own game on their own platform.

Also... I agree with everything you said about Half-Life but... "replayability"? What are you talking about? There are no meaningful alternate endings, no branching paths, no multi-faceted objectives, no game-changing decisions, no character-altering options before or during gameplay, no achievements in the original game. The events are all scripted. It's a fairly linear shooter. Only thing I can think of is the gunplay, yeah the AI is smart and that leads to interesting gunfights but that's only a handful of levels. But once you complete the story, that's it, there's really very little incentive to play it again other than "I want to play through Half-Life again".

If we're talking mods though, that's a different story, then yes, you have infinite replayability. But Black Mesa also has workshop support.

Replayability is defined as a game that's enjoyable enough to want to replay. Plenty of games have alternate endings and branching paths and multifaceted objectives but they suck and you wouldn't want to play them again

Half-Life is linear and the events are scripted, but the linearity leads you through scripted events that are interesting, and that's the part that matters

I replay Half-Life at least once a year in it's entirety, and I play certain missions or mess with the game pretty regularly on top of that, have been doing so since I first played it on PS2 back in the day when I didn't have a good enough computer

If you don't like Half-Life that much that's fine, but replayability is ultimately about something you want to replay for whatever reason that may be which may or may not be related to being an open world or emergent or whatever

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Half-Life and I have replayed it mulitple times because it's a game I grew up with, I enjoy and there aren't many games like it.

But I don't agree that you can define a game feature like replayability with a subjective factor like "enjoyment", which is why I cited objective factors like multiple endings, branching paths and multifaceted objectives. Those are either there or they aren't, that's not up for discussion. That said, I agree that the mere existence of those things is not enough for a game to be considered "replayable". Far Cry 3 and 4 had all of those things and while they were fun as hell, I don't feel the need to replay them. However, if a game does have features which encourage a second playthrough, it aims to be replayable by design alone; that's the objective part. The subjective part is, as we agreed, whether or not the player actually chooses to do so.

So, a kind of TL;DR - I don't think Half-Life can lay claim to being objectively replayable because it's not like that by design. That doesn't mean people don't replay it, because it's a quality product and people will always come back to a quality product. :cleanfloppy:

I've watched The Matrix movies more times than I can count. Didn't find a single alternate ending. But still every time I watch them, the ending changes.

Not in the same style, but close: PREY (2006) -> https://www.myabandonware.com/game/prey-dd1

Then of course, all the BioShock and Dishonored games, I recommend!

Then there's SINGULARITY (2010), but unfortunately, it suffers from developement rush and is not exactly polished enough. I found it fun, though.

Prey (2006) is the most underrated game of all time.

ok, Prey 2006 was awesome at the time, but the later prey (2018 i think) is much closer to black mesa than the 2006 prey. jus sayin.
