Brightness/Gamma Does Not Work
Have tried on all three different modes (I usually play full screen). Changing the setting does NOTHING. Does not matter what I set it to. Game remains dark. Flashlight is near useless. Cannot see squat.

I can see the desktop dim significantly when the game starts, so the game is overriding the whole system.

Game is currently unplayable for me.

You have the overdark glitch. Game starts out normal brightness but turns very dark in 2-3 seconds.

To fix the OverDark glitch Type (or copy/paste) the following two commands into the console

mat_hdr_level 2
mat_tonemapping_occlusion_use_stencil 1

Enable the console in the advanced keyboard options.
To access the Black Mesa console go to the Options menu, then select Keyboard, then Advanced. Check the developer console option.
Press the tilde "~" key and the developer console should appear.
The tilde key ~ is the first key in the numbers row.

ps
It will need to be entered every time, Unless you add it to an autoexec

Tried this, didn't make a difference. I have to run the game in a borderless window and turn the gamma up to 2.0 in the Nvidia control panel.

This worked perfectly for me, though :) Thanks for the info!

Game is unplayable due to the darkness.
Have checked everything, updated drivers, tried command line switches the lot.
Looks like I need to ask Steam for a refund :(

If you don't have a brightness slider in the new game ui, try using the old game ui.
Restart your computer and type "-oldgameui" in the launch options

Have the same issue - game is too dark. Changing brightness in the game options has zero effect. All solutions mentioned above also didn't work. Tried some standard Source engine console commands and "mat_monitorgamma 1" really helped. By default this value is 2.6. Looks like these values are messed up because in my opinion 1 has to be dark and 2.6 - bright but everything works exactly the opposite.

Do you have a discrete GPU?
