Xen also does a better job at establishing the lore of the alien setting. Interloper for instance does a much better job at showing how the Vortiguants are being enslaved by the alien controllers.
In fact that whole interaction was likely changed to being that you see Barney letting you through one of the many chamber doors, given his clearance as a security guard at the facility and during that whole tram ride he's the only one that more or less interacts with you until you reach the platform where you're let off.
