why i don't think black mesa is a good reboot
sure, black mesa does look more detailed/realistic than half life 1 but there are some things that i just don't understand at all and why i don't seem to think black mesa as the best half life 1 reboot

1. inaccurate hl2 parallels: if you do play black mesa and half life 2 (and the 2 episodes) you'll noticed that in black mesa you have infinite sprint and flash light power, where as in half life 2 those 2 are limited because of AUX power that the mark 5 HEV has, but since the mark 4 doesn't have AUX power it shouldn't really mean infinite sprint and flashlight power, also the oxygen in half life 2 is tied to the AUX power where as the oxygen level would just show a percentage of oxygen you have left in black mesa, i guess thats good but that too isn't quite as accurate.

2. different level design: i really don't get why someone in the development team thought it was a good idea to change the level design, could they have just kept the same level design from half life 1? but no matter what it just doesn't make sense, and the new level design really confuses me.

3. mp5 nerf: the mp5 is probably the best weapon you can use in half life 1, and also one of my personal favorites, but black mesa had no rights to nerf it at all, so if you don't notice the half life 1 mp5 has a 50 round capacity which is great, but black mesa nerfed it to 30, i supposed it could be more realistic, but the problem is that you're gonna have to reload more often and that makes mp5 straight from the best weapon to the worst weapon, though that seems fine for some people since they can just use other weapons like the spas-12, but that just makes mp5 not as good as it was.

4. long jump module nerf: i only figured this out when i tried the hazard course on the steam workshop, and i npticed that the long jump module only holds 3 charges, and that means once you use them all you have to wait for them to recharge, and it makes navigating xen a but more difficult

5. non english vortigaunts: not sure why the development team wanted to do that, but black mesa vortigaunts aren't supposed to be speaking a alien language of some sort, half life 2 vortigaunts could speak english, so why would that not be the case for black mesa, its not right at all

but yeah those are some reason why i don't see black mesa as a good half life 1 reboot, hope you do find it useful of the details added in for black mesa, and i kind of wonder what a sequel would be like, well, i guess we'll just have to wait and see

Hi.

This is a boohoo topic lol.

1 - Infinite sprint is a boomer shooter thing that the remake kept, don't think of it as a plothole.
2 - Original Half-Life's level design was mostly bad to begin with, you're just not expecting new paths either. At least the reboot tried to excuse the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ platforming or far-fetched paths you would need to take. But the vent cliche is really overused to the point of being used in Xen while making the areas more realistically accessible to anyone not Freeman.
3 - You must have played some late version of MP5 because it sucked with it's recoil in the original. Shotgun is a bit too OP in this.
4 - Cry me a damn river.
5 - Original Half-Life had no english vortigaunts either probably because they were not associated with it until the invasion.

To sum up, ♥♥♥♥ your opinion.

yeah, Half-Life was inspired by games like Quake. It uses the same formula as Quake 2 with the loading and scaling. It's pretty much just a quake 2 mod because it uses the engine, but it's still it's own game. It's just a run and gun platform shooter from the days of games like Doom, Duke 3D, Blood, Quake, Unreal, Serious Sam, Soldier Of Fortune. It may be a Quake 2 mod but Half-Life made Quake 2 MORE known, because Quake 2 is just BORING compared to Half-Life. BUT without Quake 2 there would be NO Half-Life :)

Hence TFC which is just the Half-Life likeness of Quake Team Fortress. They're different but mostly the same. Most never heard of the ORIGINAL Team Fortress. Probably NEVER heard of it nor ever played it. Team Fortress CLASSIC is the FIRST Team Fortress most people ever played. NOW! TFC is likely as forgotten as Quake TF because TF2 is NOW on life support. 90% Plus of the servers always empty, All old anyway.

Please keep future posts on topic and avoid unnecessary arguments.
I mean, I personally like Half-Life 1 more than BM too but not for this """reasons""" onestly. For example the AI in Half-Life 1, even if janky, is better (yes, is not as bad as you would think) and more fun to fight in comparison to BM enemies but aside from that, these reasons aren't very solid.

The very first sentence of the article is the operative one for this post. ;)

Speaking of box smashing, that was SUPER COOL 20 years ago, but now ... tedious. I could see doing one here or there to conceal an HEV battery or whatever it's official nomenclature is but boxes to break were everywhere in Half-Life.

But it's the best game ever.

1. It's a remake of Half Life 1, not 2. Half Life had infinite sprint and it keeps the original flow of combat overall too which is good.

2. Changing levels isn't horrible, making some areas bigger and it really feels better most of the time, though I can admit it can be annoying sometimes. I still don't get shortening On A Rail so much because it wasn't that bad tbh

3. I mean, it reloads faster but I'm more annoyed about changing reserves so they're lower which is a bigger issue imo. Also there's far worse weapons like Snarks which I found neutered a lot more and uh, tripmines are still pretty bad too.

4. I don't think it's too bad, you can still spam it a lot which is fine, I only found issues on the boss fight specifically.

5. Don't they speak Vortigese in the original? I believe they didn't know English until after 1. Also according to the wiki, the retcon between 1 and 2 for Vortigese was just how it sounds, it originally sounded more aggressive while it sounds a lot less in 2.

1 is a pretty bad point. I mean, sure, lets limit the running in an old school shooter than even then revised it's own design in such aspect. Please, consider that some people find that change for the better.

Sweet summer child.

I almost took your post as acceptable criticisms until you said Vortigaunts in Black Mesa should speak English.

The thread is a year old and revived by someone telling the OP to kill themselves. but you decided to blindly post anyways.

I'm helping you understand what is happening and you seem fairly ungrateful about it. You seem pretty cool.
