Stuck under a big fan?
So i needed to climb down a pit and flip a switch to turn on some fan blades.

The blades just spin forever with nothing changing.
The blades spin too fast to climb the ladder back.
The switch can't be turned off.
Jumping down into the black is just a game over.

I have saved it under these fans, so if this is some bug / bad design / "Old school game so you are meant to have game ending mistakes", I assume i need to restart the chapter?

You do indeed need to flip the switch and get to the ladder and climb up before the fan gets fast enough to kill you. If you saved after the fans are already on, then you're stuck. If you don't mind missing out on the achievements, then you could noclip around the fan back above the ladder, I guess. Yeah, it's not very good design, especially game-ending mistakes aren't a usual thing in this game. You could also see if you have an autosave from earlier.

Yeah the auto save from the moment the switch was triggered was there.

Have just been using the quicksaves so assumed it only had my quick saves and the start of chapter seeing as I never used any manual saves, thanks for info.

Wait, climbing up the ladder kills you if you wait too long?

It's a giant exhaust fan with huge blades which likely are not designed for haircuts.

I always thought the ladder was recessed into the wall far enough that the blades wouldn't hit you. But I've never stuck around down there, so hey you learn something new everyday.

I have died there in this and I think in the original, even though I know what is going to happen, because of the ladder mechanics.

IMO, the game should let you turn this fan off, I think it was possible in vanilla Half-Life. Please disregard this if I'm wrong, it's been a while since I played it.

You need the fan to be on to get out of this area. I mean, just make a quick save before it and reload if you get stuck or need a few tries. I have never tried turning it off, though....so, maybe that is a thing in both games.

What I meant was that if you get stuck underneath that fan, your options shouldn't be limited to loading an earlier save file or autosave. You should be able to turn the fan off and then start it up again so that you can make another escape attempt while the fan is slowly spinning up. I have just checked both games, and HL indeed does allow you to do that, while BM does not. IMO, this is simply bad level design.
