Explain please.

How can there be that much content. how is it possible?
Heresy Mar 7, 2020 @ 2:55pm
Thats as big as Fallout 4. How is that possible. Its as big as Farcry 4. Its 6x the size of Half-Life 2. Explain.

All downloads on Steam are compressed to save your and Steam's bandwidth, and then uncompressed when the game actually installs.

I understand that i just dont get how a game from 1998 modded to the source engine, is 6 times the size as half-life 2 which is a larger game on the same engine. Doesnt really make sense

They must of redone all the textures with 0 optimisation in some primitive form because thats huge. Its as large as a AAA game from 2015. The source engine is good but damn i didnt know it took up so much space and well in all other source games it doesnt.... so

Or possibly half of that space is used in the Xen levels that required heavy memory. Cause before 1.0 the game was like 7GB rather than 30.

Was there really a large jump in filesize? I think I remember Black Mesa being around 18GB with Xen installed previously. 28GB is.. surprising. There was something mentioned about them upping the resolution of lightmaps in a lot of places I think, to improve shadow quality. Those baked shadow textures might be taking up a lot of space.

I recall that the Xen leak from 2018 had around 1000 textures, and they must have made a lot more since then. Also Xen uses a ton of unique models for the geometry and plant life.

Because it's NOT a game from 1998, It's a completely new game built from the ground up to modern standards. Also this is roughly the same length of game as HL2, likely longer actually, and is way more detailed and complex in every single way. It absolutely makes sense.

It also uses a newer engine than HL2,

It must of used the uncompressed engine that takes up a bit more space but for some reason steam compresses it to save time and data.
