Interloper earrape
Does anyone else hear high pitched screeching after completing the plug puzzle in Interloper? It's super damn loud.

Yeah, it happens to me when a battle with alien controllers starts. Must be some DSP-related bug. There are other sound bugs in Xen-bound levels as well, for example healing pools can be heard from really far away, usually after loading a save game.

Yeah, it also happens for me when the controllers are near.

Or maybe that's intentional to make player hear you know, the mind connection with those big brain creatures. There is also "earrape" sound as you mention in Half Life 2 when grenades explode next to you. It makes player immersed. But that's valid only if it was intentional.

No, these screeches could break a speaker.

The sound is way to high pitch for it to be intentional, It also just sounds like it's a bug like the audio is maxing something out.

I thought for a second it might've been some sort of glitch sound effect to imply you're damaging them, but it's way too crazy for that. At least I really hope it wasn't intentional. I would guess it's a bug linked to the energy balls somehow, since the buzzing / beeping doesn't seem to occur before they start firing at you.

Yes this is caused by the energy orb's impact sound. Don't worry :-) This usually occurs when a sound sample uses for a source engine inappropriate sample rate or if a sound file in the file system or VPK differs from the file version located in the sound.cache. I deleted / rebuilt my sound.cache but this still occurs after a certain amount of time so we probably have to wait for a hotfix.

This is a really weird audio issue on the Steam version of the game which is not really present on our internal builds. It is a bug. We're in the process of trying to figure out what might cause it and fix it.

So I just copied all three soundfiles of the energy orbs into my local directory and played them once via console command. This seems to work well even after I deleted my sound.cache and the sound files again. I also just noticed that older versions of the affected files were stereo samples while the new ones are mono samples. This might cause the weird noises but unfortunately idk why the cache doesn't store the information from the VPK correctly. I hope this will help to fix this issue though.

By the sounds of things, it's the sound.cache that hasn't been updated. Source does this alot whenever a new sound is added in or a current sound is changed, need to update it.

I definitely have a weird corrupted sound issue during the first controller battle as well.

On the note of audio bugs, when I play Gonarch's Lair on surround sound, the music will be so bass heavy and intense that the game will crackle to the point where it gets silent, and I have to either turn the music down a lot or not play in surround sound
