The new glowing vortigaunt eyes
The new engine update made a change to the vortigaunt's eye. They are now glowing bright red. I don't know why the developers chose to do this, but in some way I like it and, in others I really don't.
I know the developers really tries to upgrade the entire ligthing aspect for the new engine, and I'm absolut in love with this step in development of Black Mesa. Many graphical features has been implimented, fixed, and tweaked.

I do like this change to the vortigaunt's well familiar eye. By giving it this upgrade, makes it feel way more hostile and dangours. A bright red colour in the middle of an enemy's face, makes the player certain, that this is an enemy without question.
But isn't the vortigaunt the enemy which turns friendly in the sequels of Half-Life? Giving a creature such a hostile appearance, really distants the player from feeling empathy towards them. If a player first plays Black Mesa and then goes on to play Half-Life 2, they probably would be a bit confused when the red glow is gone.

I think turning down the brightness of the red glow would be a great idea. There maybe is a way to turn it off, but I also do like it a bit... Just a bit too bright :happymeat:

The glow is a bit too big at the moment. We will tone it down in the future.

I don't have to tell you how eager I am to figure out where I missed the mark now, do I? :meatytears:

Nice to hear you will turn it down in the future by the way.

Hint; in hl1, we where supposed to turn the vorts against the nihilanth as a sort of uprising, but valve had to cut it.

EDIT: (To clarify, I'm talking about how we did the scene. I can't speak for Valve or how they did it!)

So what you're implying, is that the player might be fighting together with the vortigaunt against the nihilanth at the end of Crowbars Collective's reimagining of Half-Life? lol holy sh*t :happymeat:

Yep, the glow is too big, it catches the eye. But I like how it's leaving vapor trail when the Vort moves.

I'm afraid the answer isn't quite that dramatic. Cool idea, though.

I think the glow will change colour when the vorts are non-hostile, to communicate to the player that he doesn't need to shoot them.

Why not make their shackles glow as well?

I think that red glow shows up when Vorts are being controlled by controllers, and later in Xen chapters we will see a peaceful Vort without glowing eye.

would be cool but since it is a remake of the game (and Gordon did not fight with the Vortigaunts in the 1998 Half-Life) it is extreamly unlikely to include it in the remake.

Is this still yet to be toned down? I just played Black Mesa for the first time in a year or so and the Vortigaunt eyes having a ridiculous bright red trail coming off them is seriously distracting.
