Mafia III: Definitive Edition

Mafia III: Definitive Edition

Fantastic game, just finished it. My favourite in the series.
I wasn't planning on even getting to this game this year (given my crazy backlog across PS4 Pro/XBOX One X/ Switch and PC which I am trying to work through), but I started and completed the Mafia 1 remake a few weeks ago then decided to marathon the rest. I don't normally play games in a series one after the other because I quickly get bored, I like to leave space between them, but I am so glad I did here though.

This has one of the best stories I have ever experienced in a game. It's like a really good movie/TV series or book. I got completely lost in it. I loved all of these characters and the gorgeous world they created (once I had applied a reshade to make the colours pop a bit more) with the best licensed soundtrack for a game I have ever heard. I didn't even mind all the crisscrossing over the map because it gave me a chance to listen to the fantastic soundtrack.

I must be living on another planet where this game has so many negative reviews. This tale of revenge was "oh so satisfying". Definitely the best Mafia game for me.

Also one of the most brutal games I have ever played . It's incredibly violent. It's like Man on Fire/Goodfellas/Reservoir Dogs amplified up to an 11.

Such a pleasant surprise to play this expecting the worst, given the reception, and then being totally surprised by how excellent it actually was. Blown away

My take on it here:-

I really enjoyed Mafia 3 as well. At least I thought that they've put a lot of effort in the story and making sure the world of the game felt alive. It was a really good game not only story-wise but also gameplay-wise I loved how this game makes you feel like a mob boss trying to build his gangsta empire from scratch. Unlike past games which you feel more like an errand boy trying to get by and please his superiors.

I dont get it why this game got a lot of hate from fans for me its the best one in the series because of the open world mechanics. In all other games of the series you are always stuck following only main story and cant do anything else besides that. Plus the 60s soundtrack of this game rocks. Best radio soundtrack of the entire series!

Yeah neither do I. For me its the best in the series as well with unforgettable characters. Love, love, loved it!
OP: Agreed. To my mind, M3 is the _best_ RPG I have ever played. No other game I have played has the same depth of backstory revelation. (The closest would be Dragon Age: Origins) Plus the developing and noticeably evolving relationships with all of Lincoln's associates and adversaries. Plus -- once you have accepted that ALL of Sal Marcano's subordinates and allies ARE all rabid racist sociopathic bigots -- wading through their ranks like a buzzsaw exacts a sensation of the ultimate of Vengeance achieved.

I know that the game has several distinctly different endings (which can be seen on YouTube), but I just can't bring myself to choose any other path than that of the "Good" Lincoln. (That of a Good Man that finds it necessary to exterminate A LOT of Bad People in the quest for Justice.)

It is a good story, but hardly a 'Mafia' story.

What is a Mafia story for you then? The game still talks about about the Italian Mafia and feature characters with an Italian background Vito Scalletta, Sal Marcano and so on. Now I know what you gonna say "But the main character isn't Italian". Well you are wrong Lincoln Clay is Half African American and Half Italian American. In one of the intro cutscenes Father James even said that Lincoln's father was an Italian. There is even a community theory running around that Lincoln Clay is Joe Barbaro's bastard son. So I don't know what is your guideline for a good mafia game. Mafia 1 is already 18 years old. I honestly don't want the developers to always tell the same story. Its good that they tried to change things for a bit in Mafia 3 and got influenced by games such as The Godfather and Scarface: The World is Yours.

Honestly I even enjoyed the fact that they let us play as a black character. So many people these days don't know what it is like to suffer racism. Playing as an African american might help in making people relate to what was like to be black in the 60s. I'm white but I still think It was an awesome and important political critique they made in this game about the struggles African Americans had to face in the 60s.
I greatly enjoyed that the game pushed the envelope a bit with the narrative. It was thought provoking and really put the player in the shoes directly of someone who experiences racism daily and comes into contact with racist institutions ( I m a white guy too).

Besides I don’t want to only play as a burly white straight navy ops seal, I want different experiences.

The game plays more like a Special Ops officer who went bad with a CIA handler. With a secondary link to the crime world, mainly the taking down of that crime world with very little of that Mafia lifestyle present in the game.

I said it was a good story, and I really did enjoy it, but it had little to do with the Mafia world. It played more like GTA San Andreas where your taking over the city a little at a time.

Well I do agree about that. But we have to keep in mind that Lincoln was a special ops soldier in Vietnam. I think it fitted perfectly with his background as a former soldier. Plus he had Donovan a former CIA operator to help him out destroy the gangs in New Bordeaux. But I do agree with you it kinda changed the tone of the game a bit.

I guess the developers could've fixed this by adding more story missions about mafia life and maybe a few missions with flashbacks of Lincoln working for Sammy before he went to Vietnam. However there are some interesting DLC missions which give more variation to the game. I agree that they could've executed the story better to fit more into the mafia stereotypes. However, I enjoyed the game especially because we weren't stuck only following the main story, unlike past iterations of the mafia franchise.

It's rare to see some actual positive remarks regarding this game. I enjoyed it a lot, too.

This, coupled with the fact that you can play the game at your own pace, was what I liked. Also, the weapon arsenal was huge, I think a lot of people forget to mention that. My favorite weapon to use became the throwing knives. Sure, they make the game rather easy. but really fun too.

Thanks for keeping his all positive guys, even if you disagree.
While, as I stated earlier, I really, really like the game, I have to agree that M3 is NOT "a Mafia game". A"Mafia game" would be something along the lines of the Godfather movie trilogy. It would have to do with the activities and events from inside a Mafia Family. While there IS a Mafia Family in the game -- the Marcano Family -- the game is about taking that Family down. As is -- was -- common with the Mafia Family, they routinely interacted with or against other criminal groups. (These days, the equivalent would be the Cartels. They operate much like Mafia Families, but with a Latin "flavor".) Sammy's crime organization was such an associated organization: working with a Mafia Family, part of its overall operation, but not IN that Mafia Family.

By the end of the game, the Marcano Family has been exterminated. It is NOT replaced by the Clay Family. Rather, Lincoln & Company are formalized as a viable criminal organization integrated into the game's Syndicate equivalent. Much like the RL Syndicate encompassed Murder, Inc., the "Irish Mob", the "Jewish Mob", the Dutch Schultz Mob, etc., along with all of the Mafia Families.

More than half way through so far. A little repetitive and glitchy but overall amazing atmosphere and very well told story. World design is superb as well. This game gets way too much hate IMO.
Amen, brother.
I mean, even if a game is good on it's own, if it's part of a franchise, people are gonna expect it to be similar to that franchise. They fell in love with the first two games and expected 3 to be somewhat the same.

I just started my playthrough after finishing Mafia 1 DE and Mafia 2 DE And I already miss the limit you can put on the car, the simulation driving, etc. It's all these small things that really add on to what makes Mafia, Mafia. At least to me.

Seeing little things like that not back in 3 is sad. Doesn't make it a terrible game all together, it's just distanced from the franchise as a whole.

Actually, this is not what he said. He said, there were rumors... that's all.

As for the game... it has some really repetitive content later on, which is something I don't exactly like (but... at least there is optional content... both predecessors only offered a bare minimum in that regard) and it doesn't feel like a "mafia" game at all. No "typical" mafia story, no typical mafia atmosphere and no, most of the more important characters don't have any "mafia-vibe" to them. So, I would say, as a game of the Mafia franchise, Mafia 3 failed... and probably that's the main reason for it's bad reputation. There is just nothing even remotely something similar to "good fellas" or "godfather" in this game when it comes to atmosphere, characters or setting, nor does its style, way of storytelling or atmosphere represent the previous two games in any way. Meeting "old characters" therefore is a nice gimmick, but it really doesn't help to make Mafia III a more fitting part of the franchise. Even if the quoted spoiler above would have been a true fact, this really wouldn't change a thing. And no, this has nothing to do with Clay, because simply changing the protagonist alone to an italian wouldn't haved helped here one bit.

However... here is the thing... if this wouldn't have be named "Mafia III", it would probably be well received, because it's actually quite a good, maybe even a great game in it's "genre". Especially the story presentation is above everything similar games offer... including GTA 5. It has a lot of good ideas, it's technically at least a solid title even in 2020, the story itself is great, it's an awesome revenge story told very well, the characters (and their quests or sidequests) themselves are well made and interesting, it has one of the "highest value" licenced soundtracks you've ever heared in video games (and in my personal opinion one of the best, too), voice acting is great, driving is fun, gunplay is fun, there is a lot of content in the game, the cover system at least works good, you have a beautiful created, detailed and authentic designed gameworld. There are a few little flaws like the missing speed limiter, not beeing able to close doors or that Lincolns outfits in cut-scenes don't always represent what he really looks in your game, but overall it's a great title. And it would have been a great start for a new franchise. It sadly just isn't a good Mafia game at all. And a Mafia game is what people rightfully expect from something called Mafia III.
