The patch shouldn't be REQUIRED to run the game anyway - the most common problem it fixes is green screens during cutscenes/videos, but even when that happens, you can still play (the screen will just be green).
You can also use the UnX mod[wiki.special-k.info] if you like, which includes the 4GB patch and also some other QoL features. Also simply run through Steam after installation.
Note that the game (like many older games) sometimes doesn't quite communicate its state with Steam, which can cause you to miss achievements. If achievements are something you specifically care about, make lots of saves - especially before triggering hard/long achievements. That way you can just reload and try again if the game decides not let Steam know what you did.
After that I got the green screen issue on cutscenes but the crashes stopped.. well they seem to have anyway.
The 4GB patch fixed the greenscreen issues and so far i've not had anymore problems.
It's unfortunate the game doesn't work properly but at least there are ways to fix it.
