Which FF series to play?
What FF-SP series of FF should I buy that has modern graphics or at least good graphics. At least on par with FF14 graphics.
Which would I start with?
I already play FF14 but wanted to try a SP story on the side.

For visuals, X/X-2, XII, XIII/2/Lightning Returns, and XV. Type-0 is also semi-decent.

Of these, X/X-2 are probably the overall best set, though X-2 is divisive. XII is unconventional and has more of a focus on political drama, and the battle system is weird but can be very cool if you get into it. XV is a good game that clearly had big development issues and feels unfinished (though probably less so than say, Cyberpunk 2077). The XIII trilogy is divisive. XIII is a decent game with a battle system that is a lot of fun in postgame challenges, but is very repetitive before then. Some really high highs and low lows throughout. The sequels are both waaaay better, though also extremely experimental (particularly Lightning Returns) to the degree that they don't feel entirely connected. Type-0 is probably not the game to start with - it was originally a PSP game and was good for what the system could do, with a lot of pick up and play for 10 minutes here and there, but on PC it translates to a very repetitive experience and the PC/PS4 version completely ruined a lot of the original art direction.

But honestly the best overall set of games is probably VII-VIII-IX. I'd recommend giving them a shot even if they look old.

If you like XIV in particular, a lot of the stuff in that game references things from I, II and III. The pixel remasters out now are quite solid and I've really enjoyed finally retroactively getting some of the story inspirations and references in XIV.

Let's get the ranks for best FF and a short reason why. I've only played a few of them, none of the older ones (NES, SNES). I started with FF7 on its release.

Wouldn't want to do a strict ranking but in rough order:

Extremely great games throughout/classics: 9, 7, 8, 10, 6, 4 (can swap around 6,4 and 10, but think as an overall package the PS1 trilogy is just better realized on the whole).

Good games with some glaring issues: 12, 13, 15 (can swap 12 and 13, though I feel as a complete, finished-feeling game 13 is better than 15. A fully realized 15 would probably be an all-time great though, if it had the extra development time. 13's sequels I'd probably put at the top of this tier just because they are packed to the gills with content and extremely fun games to play, even if the story meanders more. 10-2 is also probably here towards the bottom).

Games that do a couple things quite well but are more interesting as a bit of history and harder to go back to: 5, 2, 3, 1. (Very solid job system in 5 and a lot of future franchise hallmarks in 2, along with experimental gameplay and levelling which would become more varied in later games. 3 is harder to go back to than 5 but its job system ethos is notably different. 1 is purely interesting as the first entry of the franchise and not exactly worth replaying. I could swap all these around tbh, though I think 2 and 5 are more interesting than the rest).

MMOs: 11 is an exceptional world and amazing story buried underneath a lot of antiquated and (now less) time consuming MMO trappings. I would love a single-player reimaginging. 14 is an absolute gem and probably the overall best Final Fantasy game just from a content and world/story perspective, but it's not really a fair comparison.

That was my thought when playing through the game several months ago. I could see so much potential in it; I think it could have potentially even been the best in the series. But ultimately the game just felt simultaneously huge and too small, like they spent too much time on the open world and that left the story bare bones and the combat and leveling systems needing several more iterations.

In my opinion (which probably won't be shared by many so grain of salt alert)

1: FF8. The story "Starts" off really solid and engaging. With fun characters that have a lot of personality. Around the 3rd disc or 6 or 7 hours or so into the game it begins to get a little weird but the characters and the battle system keep me coming back!

2: FF7 because for a lot of people, including mine, it was a gateway into JRPG's. Again a story that starts off really cohesive and well with great characters that had a lot of personality. Today a lot of these characters are RPG standards or set types but back then big sword guy and one armed black gun guy who was a tank was never before seen. Not to mention the best summons done anywhere to this day and the presentation.

3: FFX at the time this was the pinnacle of gaming graphics and had a fun story. It starred an unusual bunch of characters who somehow came together well. Again followed by a great battle system.

4: FF9 because it got back to the roots of final fantasy. 4 man battle system and classes. Followed by a more light hearted story with an amazingly fun protagonist.

5: Final fantasy 15, flawed but yet beautiful. A game that really has to grow on you. At a glance the main character seems like a self centered emo, who could care less about his responsibilities as a prince and would be king. He's just here to hang out with his bros and see some ♥♥♥♥ along the way. But by the end the character grows and you grow with him. It's not perfect and there are a lot of elements of the game that seem as though if they were just developed a little better this could be a masterpiece.

So there you have it, have some fun. And if you get bored ask me about Metal gear Solid lol

My FF is limited. I started with 7 on the PSX, loved it. FF 10 was next, another great title, although Wakka was obnoxious, ja? Then I tried 10-2. Not a favorite. I didn't like the power-up part of combat where I could make my character a super soldier. Took too long. Combat was stretched out just to achieve that buff. An odd decision for them to retread 10.

Next was the controversial tube slide, FF 13, which - wait for it - I loved too. People flip their lids. Dude, you're running in a tunnel for half the game. Dude, the paradigm thing is stupid. Lightning is a pissy b%$^ch. I will rebut these opinions with incredible graphics and production. Even today it looks superb. I like the paradigm system. It was different but acceptable. And the tunnel thing? Didn't bother me. I had fun. Then I tried FF 13-2 and had the same reaction as I did to 10-2. A retread with time travel. Never finished it or even got a few hours in.

And that's it. I wanted to play 15 but I have too many other half finished games collecting digital dust.

Good to read the comments from Atom, Xaphnir and Thanos :)

The graphics do hold up fantastically for an 11-year-old game.

That half-game long tutorial, though...

The Paradigm system (FF13) is just the job system using a different name. As for 13 as a game, it is fun and fast battles (normal mobs). Graphics are really good, the leveling system is like leveling system in 7 but in 3D.

I didn't like 12 because it was more ARPG and it had that annoying ability to throw OP creatures (like the T-Rex looking thing at the beginning that takes off 700 HP when you get your first bounty), it reminded me of FF2 in that OP mobs would gate some of the overworld, causing instant KO if you happen to cross the invisible line. At least 12 didn't have the annoying leveling system of 2, where it forced you to use certain gear to level up kinda like how Oblivion/Skyrim does it. FF8 was also terrible since all mobs leveled with you. So you could theoretically beat the game at lvl 1, but it would be the same difficulty even at level 99.

If I played for story, I would play a visual novel. I play primarily for gameplay.

@Alk so the paradigm was used in past FF games?

The game really wasn't that much of an ARPG. If you really look at the combat system, the main thing that differs from prior ATB systems is that you can move around in combat, making positioning matter.

As for strong enemies? That's one of the things I love about the game. I love the challenge of completing the hunts right when they're available. Except for Roblon, ♥♥♥♥ that thing.

In a different form, yes. Like in FF3/5 where you can switch jobs pretty much on the fly and new ones only given at certain times during the storyline. (like FF13) I actually loved FF3+5 for that, since it stretched out the gameplay a bit.
Ryika 2021 年 8 月 20 日 上午 11:11
I think the strong, optional enemies are one of the great things about the game. Especially the ones that roam freely, since they make the world feel so much bigger, and so much more dangerous. AND they give you a chance to create memories.

That T-Rex is literally just there for that very reason - it doesn't block anything, you can't really run into it by accident unless you're paying no attention at all, and the game even leads you back through that area later on when you're strong enough to fight it without having to resort to alternative tactics.

There's no normal enemy in the entirety of FF13 that I remember as vividly as that T-Rex iin FF12 because most of the levels in FF13 are just boring corridors with enemies designed for you to kill.
