Is there any way to revert the graphics back to the native PS2?
I'ma be honest, I despise the HD graphics. Hate them. This game has sat in my library for years doing nothing. But before I move it into the "Waste of Money" folder, I gotta ask. How would one mod in the original graphics to this game? I've made mods for various other games, so I'm not totally incapable. Never a FF game though. Is it reasonably rudimentary texture swap? Or much more involved? I'm leaning just playing on PCSX2 at this point.

Probably not feasible.

The only solution would likely be emulation. Which is borderline illegal, and therefore not something you should be doing.

"Illegal" haha okay. I'm just pulling the disc image off of my own PS2 copy and playing it on software on my PC. Nothing illegal about that. Thanks anyway.

illegal according to the mods here - does not matter that it is perfectly legal and that steam hosts emulators - talking about it getts the mighty mods angry.

It's wierd how they uglified the game AND ruined the music for the HD remaster. It's like they were intentionally trying to make it worse.

They just sharpened the graphics. They didn't change anything. Looks fine to me. PS2 had an aspect ratio of 640×480. It's gonna look real tiny on your HD or even worse 4K screen. On top of that it was made for TVs that used lines instead of pixels so it's going to look super choppy on modern screens even though it looked fine on those old TVs.

If you want the old experience the only thing you can do is hook up a PS2 to an old 4:3 line TV.

Yeah the environment textures are okay, but the models, specifically the faces, look like wood to me.

Not exactly, they introduced new textures over the old meshes. Of which I hate the new character textures; I prefer the old style. I also take it you aren't too familiar with the work on the PCSX2 emulator? You can (I did) upload the disc image to your PC and use PCSX2 to play the game. You can even run PCSX2 through Steam for easy controller support. Also you can a) patch the game for 16:9 ratio, and b) upscale the rendering all the way up to 8k; even though 8k is a bit ridiculous. 1080 is plenty good imo. There are also people who have upscaled the old PS2 graphics to 4k too. Check out the texture swaps on gbatemp.net or just find the youtube videos comparing this HD remaster to the fan made upscaling.

I'm familiar with the emulator. I play FFXII on that one. Looks better upscaled than the Zodiac age to be honest. But I've put the images of FFX old and new side by side. I've also seen videos. There's no new meshes as far as I can see.

This is the texture pack I'm using. The same guy made one for FFXII too. If you like the HD remaster, then God bless ya. But I feel like the differences are quite apparent.

So you agree that there are differences then? That was my point. You can like whatever you want to.
>I like old style
>You like new style
Both of these things can be true.

Yea the upscaled one looks more choppy. But there's no difference in mesh/3d models. It's all just textures,aliassing/sharpening.

The facial animations have been altered, partially redone, and for some scenes are broken.

And there have been a lot of model changes:
https://youtu.be/ewmxdhF3F7o?si=V0g5xe3wAF4HExXm&t=385
(and that scene shows how drastic the visuals have changed in some scenes - the characters do not fit into the scene at all - they look as if they were cropped in).

Yeah, Tidus looks like a doll, or like he's been carved from wood. And all of their eyes just look.. soulless to me.
Razer Aug 17, 2024 @ 9:37am
It's more to personal preference I'd say. I always felt the animations in the original X were off. In the original Tidus looks like he swallowed a frog and the image is all shaky in certain spots. I think it's been improved and people are mostly leaning on old memories rather than what is actually on screen. But hey, you got the option to play upscaled on the emulator so there's something for everyone. The most important reason for me to play it here is so I can have it on steam and the gameplay hasn't been altered. Plus it contains the international version of X-2, which we never got where I live. We did get the international version of X, but X-2 didn't unfortunately. So if I would play that on the emulator it would be "illegal". And looking at your name Dutchman you'd be in the same boat as me.
Hinnyuu Aug 17, 2024 @ 9:58am
It's entirely fine to say "I don't like the new animations" - just as it is fine to say "I do like the new animations", or anything in between.

Just... don't try and turn it into some kind of personal insult as though the devs set out to destroy your beloved aesthetic because they're mean-spirited, malicious miscreants.

Me personally? I just don't care. I never noticed the new animations as standing out in some kind of negative way, and it really just does not reach anywhere I give a hoot about. The graphics are better overall - that's all that matters to me in that department.
