So does FF X-2 really have only 3 playable characters?
Personally I love JRPG's that let you select between a decent amount of different characters.

The minimal would be somewhere around the amount Breath of Fire games had, but more is better (just look at Chrono Cross with over 40 playable characters, awesome!).

So of course I decided to look into the amount of characters X/X-2 has before even considering whether I'd want to play it or not. According to wiki FF X has 7 playable characters, which is alright, so long as those characters are interesting enough.

However according to wiki the FF-X2 only has 3 playable characters and they all happen to be females, just regular skinny human females (at least appearance-wise, I except their personalities to be different and interesting).

Is that really the case? If it is that makes me question that entire game. Is there any reason why it would only have 3 characters, and why those 3 characters would be the ones that are available? Is it a much shorter game than the FF X?

Yes but it's not as limiting as it sounds with regards to combat. The 7 characters in X generally fill a specific combat role for most of the game, but the job system in X-2 allows you to make the 3 characters change betwen any of the ~20 different ones.

Strictly speaking it only has three playable characters, Yuna Rikku and Paine. You can substitute them for monsters you have caught in one of the side-quests in the game, but only in battles.

If you were to just clear the stuff needed to advance the story it would be shorter then FFX, but its best to do all the other stuff avilable to get the story and the better endings.

there's four endings you can get, the bad ending, the normal ending, the good ending which needs 70% or more of the game complete along with two certain events and the 100% perfect ending.

Moridin made me interested by saying you can use monsters in battle and then Shirayuki killed that interest by telling me those monsters cannot be controlled =D

Thank you for the information guys, it's appreciated. I have another question; how important is X-2 for the story? That is could one be satisfied with how FF X ends, does it end in some kind of cliffhanger and playing FF X-2 is a must if you want the full story?

Basically, X-2 is enjoying the world you saved in X. You have a perfectly complete and enjoyable story with X alone, but it's nice and fun to learn about the consequences in X-2.
