If you already played the game, story progression is not slow, especially if you never grind during the story (to add a bit of challenge and not kill everything with one shot) and leave it for the endgame content.
It basically goes
Zanarkand -> Omega -> Don Tonberry
The reason being that you need some decent stats to get the Triple AP weapons, and Omega works well for that. Just try to avoid the Demonlith and Malboros. Stick near the save orb, is what I'm saying.

Be wary that the sphere grid system allows you levels of minmaxing you never thought were possible. Good luck!
