Then as the journey treks on, he grows up and matures. Hence the contrast in his tone between the narration (looking back) and the cutscenes (how he was at the moment).

If you haven't seen Spoony's review of the game, check it out. A lot of it is just petty nitpicking and hyperbole but I gotta say I find it hard to argue his complaints about Tidus. As much as he appears to hate the game in his review, later at a Convention (I forget which one) he goes on to say that ff 10 was an okay game.
I don't remember having this much hate for him 15 years ago when I played it on the PS2.

Square, clearly enamored of their graphics and determined to spend many pointless moments showing them off, has released their first Final Fantasy for the Playstation 2. Join Tidus (Tightass), a wanky young jock, as he whines and wanks his way through the first installment. We get a glimpse of a cooler character….but alas, for only a very brief moment. Damn you, Square.
Tidus is a wanker. I remember reading this alongside playing through the game back in the day. Depending on your age, you may have actually related a lot to him 15 years ago, but now that you're older, it just makes you cringe.
Those recaps are still well worth reading through and I often cite them. They always crack me up!
He got transfered into a world he doesn't know, Auron knows about Tidus father, that Tidus hasn't seen since he was a little kid. He thinks that Auron might know a way back and Auron is the only person he really knew. That is way more important than any championship. Calling him irresponsible because of that is silly.
