Poor Lulu. Her sphere grid path just isn't very good.
Speed is very important in this game and the last thing you want is to bring in an excruciatingly slow party member (Auron and Lulu) and never be able to take them out because their next turn doesn't occur any time soon. Lulu also has arguably the worst overdrive.

If you teach Yuna some black magic, she becomes a better black mage than Lulu. Even with just a couple spells.

Auron suffers from the same problems to an extent. Slow party members are a burden.

Speed isn't very relevant when you've got Tidus and his delay attacks. On top of that, you can switch in the slowers characters using faster ones. It takes a long time before you get any Black Magic Spheres, so Lulu will be your go to Black Mage until end-game.

After Zanarkand, it won't matter. Tidus, Wakka and Auron will be the default team, as Auron's Banishing Blade is a souped up Full Break, and Tidus and Wakka can deal over a million damage with their overdrives.
Nope. Sure you can switch in a slow character, but then you're stuck with that slow character in there and it may be a long time before you can switch them out. Lulu can be ditched long before end game.

And you're wrong about the default team. The usual end/post game team is Tidus, Wakka, Rikku. A maxed out Auron with an already full OD gauge would be useful to bring in, use the OD, and then sub him out. But I wouldn't use him as a default member.

Once you've used a Banishing Blade, Auto-Phoenix/Auto-Potion will do all the healing for you, and all that's left to do is spamming Entrust and Attack Reels x infinity, unless you want to do the Quick Hit approach. The two other members supporting Wakka are interchangable at that point. I've facerolled my way through the end-game content many times with this setup over the years. Mix has had limited use.

I don't think some ppl here will agree with me, but i have at least to try to explain what i think.

Tidus, is a really nice party member, high speed, decent damages, various spells.

Wakka is pretty nice, decent damages, can attack targets untargetables from almost all the other ones, can kill ennemies with high agility. His overdrives are pretty usefull, and the last one incredibly powerfull - the most powerfull of the game.

Auron, and this is why i said some ppl won't agree with me, is a really nice character, since he's using really strong attacks, having some usefull abilities, have a really nice tanking possibility and gods, really usefull overdrives (that are just OP lategame or when you try to beat the optionnal bosses). Slow, but imo it's really a little cost for his strenghts.

Lulu, she have two different phases. First one since you got her till a bit before half game she's OK, have decent damages, can help a lot in few cases. Pretty nice to have her.
Second phase, when you reach midgame, she becomes almost useless unless you find only magic killable monsters.

Rikku gets two phases as well as lulu, she's really nice since you get her till you have a decent team, then she have the second part and she gets just OK, but still have really nice overdrives that can help a lot in some fights.

Kimahri....nothing really much to say, he's pretty useless all game long, can just have few utilities in few fights with overdrive skills. Not really usefull for a Ronso.

Yuna...well, as a white mage you need her, no matters how you play she is usefull for that, and more, her summons are just needed for some fights. By the way, even if you don't need it you WANT to summon them for the amazing beauty of the summons and controlling them.
More, the fact that all the summons have an overdrive jauge, and a double if you get yuna's as well just make that she's OP, specially if you have Anima and use two times its overdrive...That's just totally broken.

So, i played this game on PS2 for a long time, completing the game at 100% many times (and yes, completing the sphere grind to get 255 eveywhere is really long, specially for luck stat...that require, btw Auron, Wakka and Tidus for their obvious power with overdrives) so i can say that from my experiences, since i tried to play with every characters.

Actually, i think that Tidus, Wakka, Auron and Yuna are correct, Rikku pretty too but a bit less and Lulu and Kimahri really bad.

Ofc, this game is not so hard that you can play with the characters you want instead of the ones you needs, so almost everything is possible with the worse characters except the hardest optionnal fights, that means really few things in the game...so there is no need to focus on the bests, just play what you wanna play :)
