You can also unlock One-Eye in the monster arena by capturing at least 4 of each eye-type monsters. It can drop weapons with the Triple AP ability, which sell for high amounts of gil (more the more slots they have).
Those are both fairly late-game sources, but that's where you tend to need all the money (for Bribe, among other things).
If you're still early in the game, there isn't really a special trick to it. Just fight stuff, open chests, and sell equipment you don't need. The way gear works in FFX you don't really need to buy a lot of stuff - you find some good pieces in chests, and a lot of power comes from your Sphere Grid leveling, not your equipment. Especially early on. Be frugal, loot prolifically, and you shouldn't have a problem with money.
The main-story is decently easy and normally should not give you any money problems. If you think about getting the money for that one person - not really important and in general not worth it.
And as Hinnyuu said - only very late in the game (basically after you can beat the entire main-story) will money be needed. And at that point anything you farmed earlier is basically nothing in comparison (One-Eye can give well over 1 MILLION gil per hour, others even more).
I would even go so far as to say to not worry about it at all. More important during normal gameplay is to just grab EVERYTHING you can. Leave no chest unopened, specially in the temples always do everything you can (the extra things give nice rewards), as soon as you can capture enemies - do it.
Play the game and IF you think you want to go for the harder optional stuff then start looking into it.
