Is this connected to other parts story wise ?
Hello. Is this game connected with other parts of FF in terms of characters, story or any other aspect ? I ask this because I'd like to try it out but I haven't played any other FF game before.

None of the game numbers ranging from the original Final Fantasy -> XV are related in story, except their sequels or prequels with the same number in it (FFIV Afteryears, FFX-2, FFXIII-2,FFXIII: Lightning Returns...) Although the first 4: FF I, II, III and IV have similar stories going, they are never follow-ups from the subsequent one.

So X and X-2 are connected and come as one package if I get it right ?

Yeah, they are connected since X-2 is what happens after X, basically it's yuna's puberty.

There's a very controversial connection which makes FF X-2 and by extension FF X prequels to FF VII. Near the end of FF X-2 you come across a young Al-Bhed boy that's researching a method to harness the planet's own lifeforce as a means to supply energy to cities. That young boy is called Shinra...

That's a really, really inaccurate description. Shinra is a member of the Gull Wings being the Tech person of the team and is with the rest of the group from the start. Later in the game he will mention the potential of harnesssing the energies of the Farplane but he isn't actually actively researching it. Another character will also make a reference to it if a certain sidequest is resolved in a particular way.

Shinra also voiced by Bobby Hill's voice actress.

Square likes reusing names. Don't look too much into that. After all, how many FF games feature a Cid?

This case is slightly different.

The script for both FF VII and FF X-2 came from the same author, who has apparantly gone on record in the official Ultimania guides as stating this was a deliberate reference and that even though SquareEnix hasn't given any official word through the company, his intention was to connect the games.

Until Square officialy state it, it's nothing more than an easter egg.

Just sounds like an easter egg to me.

All Final Fantasy games have seperate stories. For example, FFVII and FFX both have different stories. The gameplay may be the same, but they are completely different story-wise.

Also, some Final Fantasy games have multiple games within it's metaseries. Let's use FFVII as an example.

Here are the games in the "Final Fantasy VII metaseries":

- Final Fantasy VII
- Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII
- Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

All of the games within FFVII's metaseries have a related story, or a story that is within the same timeline. Multiple FF games do this, too. More examples would be FFX-2 (the FFX metaseries), FFXIII-2 (the FFXIII metaseries), and FFIV: The After Years (the FFIV metaseries).

-

tl;dr - Every main release Final Fantasy game has a seperate story (ex: comparing FFVII to FFX). However, some FF games have their own metaseries, and the games released in that metaseries all take place on the same timeline (like FFVII and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII).

I think Cid is kind of a special case since there's a Cid (even multiple Cids) in the majority of the games in the franchise.

Them reusing the name Sarah/Serah might be a bit more of an accurate comparison, since it doesn't happen in EVERY game but occurs in more than one.

That is a much better comparison.

story and characters are not connected to eachother.

only creatures that are connected to eachother are moogles and chocobos.
well also some character names, as in Cid who is usually an important background character.
Without Cid in FFX there would be no airship or Rikku, since it is her dad.

Unless it was specifically stated by Square/Square Enix, none of the creatures or Cids in any of the Final Fantasy games have any familial relations with each other. Most likely it's just an easter egg that some of the creatures and names are recurring. It was probably done to give a nod to some of the other games in which they originated, and give it the "Final Fantasy" charm.
