This shows the exact path you can take to easily win. Anything else is how used you are to controlling and adjusting to the bad control when a pole is reached. Always move straight through the center because if you are wall hugging, you lose some speed and if you lose about 3 seconds of distance covered from wall hugging, you lose the race.
I did it using a keyboard after about 3 tries on that path. You just have to get used to the instant change in control. The moment you reach a pole, your control will shift based on which path of the fork you take. You have to adjust and hold Up+Right, only right or only up to move straight and not wall hug. After a few fail run, you should be able to remember the exact part that forces you to shift the way you command the chocobo.
I know It's frustrating, but dont give up/throw out your pc/uninstall the game.
Its a 4-way directional axis, not 8-way. In other words its like a d-pad: stiff. Makes turning harder than it should be.
