He's not my favourite protagonist I really like Cloud and Zidane for completely different reasons, but he's a million times better than Vaan for sure.
I suspect most of those who hate him have only really taken a superficial look at his character.
i mean... him sniffing Auron? Even up to Zanarkand he can not be honest with the group of people that saved his live and that depend on him to protect Yunas live.
But he does slowely mature up through the game.
I don't think he's whiny at all. Perhaps people feel that way because he can be a tad bit inside his own head when he narrates. But those are basically glances at his own honest thoughts and feelings, so I rather consider it realistic. People are unfiltered in their mind, after all. And, course his mind does address the more tough situations he's dealing with and how it truly makes him feel. I loved to get a more personal in-depth glance at what moves and drives a character.
Alongside of that view inside Tidus' mind, outwardly, I see him being the kind of person who's always trying really hard to be a positive, encouraging, and overall happy presence to others, even if we know he doesn't always feel too happy, because the player is made aware what he's inwardly dealing with. That's where I can relate to him, too. No matter how bad I feel, with my thoughts kinda grim, I try to keep on going and put a smile on my face too.
This is also why I never get the people who call him too happy go lucky, either. He isn't at all. He is neither whiny, nor happy go lucky. He does have his struggles, and he's just really trying hard to be a good helpful person. However, sometimes, he does falter a bit, too. But, I like that as well, because flaws and things like that, are what make a character feel more human, too. He felt like a very balanced well-rounded character to me because of that.
He's definitely still my all time favorite FF protagonist to date, though, that's also fairly easy considering most of my favorite FF characters from any of the games, aren't actually protagonists at all.
