Chocobo Race glitch?

I'm trying to get the Caladbolg, and as per expected, the Chocobo race is the most frustrating thing under the sun right now. One thing, aside from the bad controls that I'm finding ESPECIALLY grating is that I notice the Chocobo does NOT run in a straight line. I notice that half the time when I try to tap left on the D-pad, the Chocobo will IMMEDIATELY correct its course and veer back right-- often missing the balloon I was aiming for or running right into a bird.

Is it supposed to do this or is there something up with my controller?

It's supposed to do this. There are invisible boundary areas around the track where the chocobo will turn away. It's not easy to steer, which is completely intentional. The camera switches also don't help.

The race can be fairly frustrating to finish, but it's frustrating by design not because it's bugged.

Keep trying and you will get it. This one is like 80% luck 20% skill
