First of all, in the original language (Latin) the pronunciation of "Titus" is indeed "teetus" ([ˈtɪtʊs]). At least as far as we can tell Latin phonology. Most European languages that were influenced by or derived from Latin still pronounce it that way.

Secondly, those two names are derived from different languages. Tidus is derived from the Okinawan language where "tiida" means "Sun" ("yuna" in Okinawan means "night"). It's transcriped as ティーダ (Tīda) in Japanese, which is phonetic, so there's no ambiguity about the pronunciation: [ˈti:da].

English voice media that have featured Tidus have been inconsistent in their pronunciation, though that's not uncommon since localization teams don't necessarily always preserve continuity (plenty of examples for that).

Play Dissidia. Hear the official voice acting. Learn why you're wrong.

I guess we better start calling Tifa "Taifa", too.

Funny - why the part in Kingdom Hearts 2 but not Kingdom Hearts 1?
https://youtu.be/IQLOazsVYoc?t=13

It is almost like - they didn't care.
The original Name is "Tida" and it is pronounced [ˈti:da] - as Hinyuu already wrote.
And then there are the 3 dialects of his name in english.
Why not treat it as such? The name "Maria" also has many different ways people say it, same goes for many other names too.

nobody knows tbh lol. in KH2 its tiedus as in .. (Taidus)
but James Arnold Taylor himself said its Teedus even though he never spoke out the name back then for FFX...

Oh good. We got a Disney game for clarification lol. I love a game where a duck, a dog and a mouse beat Sephiroth with a key. We should definitely use that for reference.

Na, nothing wrong with being a casual. To be fair though, not knowing the history of names in games isnt so much being a casual as it might not be relevant info to that individual.

First response is correct about their names. FFX is pretty big with the hidden meanings. Tidus and Yuna being the Sun and Moon as an example.

I will admit myself, the FFX lore, is a challenge to follow and keep things straight a lot of the time. Lots of people tend to think this game has time travel for example, which it doesnt, at all.

Also, there are what, 15 Final Fantasy games now? Each containing their own self contained stories and lore? I really dont blame anyone for not remembering some things :D

the japanese call him "Teedasu" the game is japanese so this is the original pronunciation

It's "Teeda" (ティーダ / Tīda), there is no S-sound at the end in the Japanese name - which makes sense since that's more likr the Okinawan word the name comes from.

In voiced titles in English, they've used both "Teedus" and "Taidus", so I guess the verdict's out; in Japanese there is no ambiguity since the name is spelled phonetically.

This is a stupid thread (because it matters not at all), but I will always call him Tidus (pronounced Tai·duhs).

It's pronounced Teedus. The original voice actor himself pronounced it this way on the FFX DVD extras.

I always assumed it was related to the word tide, or tidal -- what with the water theme and all -- and so always pronounced it that way in my head.

It's interesting though.
